Title: My New Show Room
Post by: POSTON WIDEHEAD on May 25, 2018, 08:16:36 PM
I needed a cleaner place for displaying Mantels, finished slabs, unique pieces of wood, birdhouses, benches, tables, etc.

So I took my carport which was just a catch all for stickers, junk, my trailer and anything else and me and Kirk cleaned it out.

The size is 20 x 20 floor.

Right down the middle I have Pine boards that are 2 x 22 inches wide. So far thats the first thing that makes people drool.  :D

This will be our new show room.
We are no where near being finished but I will post updates along the way.

I'm trying to heal my shins from walking between the 2 x 10's putting the floor down. (see pic).

I'm letting the siding air dry before adding baton. Yes the floor will have cracks after drying but thats the country way.

Hope you like it. each pic is sorta self explanatory but I'll answer anything.
Its nice to own a Sawmill.  :)

I will be starting on the sides soon. Putting in lots of hours trying to keep up with sawing and building but Kirk puts in hours of work on his days off from the State. Couldn't do it with out him.
My plans are to build a fake fireplace in side to display Mantels for customers.
More to come.  :)

David,

Its not going to be big enough. :D

I like the fake fireplace to display the mantels on so the customer can get a feel for how they will actually look. Are you keeping a piece of scrap wood off the same cut so the customer can use to test stain samples like you gave the customer who came the day I was there? I still think that is a great idea.

Are you going to put the mantels on mobile racks you can roll around in the shed? At what stage do put the mantels on display? While green, air dried, KD, or finished and stained/tun oil applied, etc?

Looks good, what'd ya use to screw the wood to the metal?  When I put wood siding on my carport I got some self tapping wood to metal screws from fastenal they had these little wings on them to get through the wood and once they got to the metal the wings break off and then the steel drill part of the deal takes over.  They were wicked neat but they didnt make em long enough for full 2" lumber so had to saw 1-5/8" but with accuset it no gotta matta anyways.  Anyways my friend found some at TSC for me later on when we needed some in a pinch and fastenal had to special order them.  I can't remember the price difference.

I used the self tapping screws. I sawed 2 inch lumber. I had 2 inch screws......but what I did was take a butterfly bit and drill down in the wood 1 inch..... I marked the bit to get a constant depth. Then drill the screw through the remaining 1 inch of wood and now the wood is secure and the screw head is hidden.

That book matched siding on the front is neat.  With that green roof you may need to put a good sized fan in the back to pull some air through for cooling.

David,

You did not mention how you were going to display the mantels. Are they going to on permanent shelving or on movable racks.

If you use movable racks and you need the extra space (Who doesn't need extra space?) you can keep adding racks until you only have one aisle left and can push the racks up tight against each other and leave the aisle where you want it and still see the mantels on both sides. You can store a whole lot more slabs that way.

Everyone of you know this.....it is so hard to get something done for your self if you have a sawmill.
This is a holiday weekend and the folks was coming in pretty steady off and on to pick up lumber or order Pine siding.

I did manage to get a little something done on my showroom but not much.

I thought about my gable vent all morning. On the inside will be screen to keep birds from building in the place.
On the outside, I built a 1 piece vent out of Cedar and to spruce it up a little and I did a Cedar weave. It really stands out......zoom in for better look.
Got the right side trimmed out in Cedar too.

And last I put....what I call wind brackets so when my doors are opened or closed a burst of high wind won't blow the bottom of the doors away from the building. Could save some repairs.

Once you get it all closed in, put in a couple of large room dehumidifiers to help keep your inventory dry.

My residence is in a subdivision.....can't do things there.
But across the road is our farm. As long as we are classified as a farm we can build about anything. ( barns and sheds ).
If we need power....then we need a permit and inspection.

That is awesome. Love the cedar sliding doors...and your attention to detail is "goatworthy"(new word I think). The way the knot pattern is parellel to the roof line on the siding on both sides of the door is really cool. It is really hard trying to work on this project with all the rain we are having.
The amount of rain we have had in the last week is unheard of and more is coming.

But I got a few hours in today and was soaked to the bone when I went home.

I got the front Cedar trim completed. Those round corners drove me crazy.

But thank goodness I turned the corner and have started down the side. The windows I'm installing are freebies from a contractor friends pile of used windows.

The cedar trim is really RED from the rain. When it dries I will oil it real good.  ;D

Naw, that was a few years ago in the fall, I remember cuz I was at Myrtle Beach for a week and it rained all week, when we went across the street to the beach the water was half way to my knees in the street.

The first time we saw the sun all week is when the airplane went above the clouds the day we left. ;D

Poston, I really like your woven vents, that's thinking outside of the box!  But, sadly, I'm concerned that your siding might fall off due to a lack of nails.

I'm tired but I keep saying....Just 1 more board.  :D

I got 1 side done except for the baton. I hate it when I put up a piece of cedar and a chunk falls out. Got some glue and shot a few brads in it and that fixed it.

I think its starting to take shape now...this wall anyway.

I needed 1 step to put on the front so I sawed a piece of White Oak. It fit like a glove and the doors slide right across it.

I then put some mulch around the front to keep mud from splashing.

Then I put a mixture of Off Road and Hydraulic oil in my pump sprayer.

I just sprayed the Cedar and it sucked it right up. I actually sprayed it 3 times.

It sure darkened it up.

A normal Saturday. People coming in for this or that and not much work on my Garage Barn.
Saturday is when I schedule my 50 dollar sawing jobs.

Kirk and I went to eat breakfast early at a place he had never been about 20 miles away.
A little hole in the wall town.
When we came out a guy had set up a yard sale across the road.
When I stepped out the door....I saw it!

An old light that had been taken off an old Kentucky Fried Chicken demolition job.
I gave the guy 25 bucks for it and took it and put it on my barn.

Still wired and has the bulb.
I did stop at Lowe's and get a can of black grill paint and spray.

Looks pretty good I think.

I have mixed used motor oil with diesel before too but you will need to strain the used oil or it will stop your nozzle up on your sprayer.

That light is cool.

The used motor oil will stink for quite a while.  John and I mixed up a concoction of tar, used oil, boiled linseed oil and diesel to coat the kiln.  It needs to be recoated now but I think we will forego the used motor oil next time.

I like the light. Now you need a Texaco sign.
caveman, next time leave out all that other stuff and just use the used oil. Mine did not smell. If it would of someone would've reminded me of the smell everytime they walked to the horse run in. ::)

One of the best uses I have found for used motor oil is keeping the termites away.
When building anything whether building or rack to stack lumber on or whatever if you will put  used motor oil under and around your blocks you will not have to worry about the termites coming thru it and up your blocks and it will last for many years.

Slowly but surely.

The exterior Pine is drying nicely.
Won't be long before I can nail the Baton on.

Paul and I started on 1 of the walls inside.

5/8" Pine boards spaced at 6 inches.

We then put up 15/16" Cedar Slabs with live edge.

Paul is sure growing up and is a lot of help. I think he's trying to grow a Goat beard like his Old Man.  :D :D :D

Each wall will be somewhat different.
Every customer wants lumber....but not every customer has the vision of what something will look like.
Hopefully with the different styles of constructing, a customer will have an idea of what he or she can expect.
We have been talking about maybe teaching a class on how to build your own bench in our new barn.
The customer pays a fee, gets to pick slabs available to the class and we let them sand, install legs and stain or oil their finished bench. A good way of beating the monotony of sawing all the time and a good use of a Saturday morning.

More to come.

Because...... #1. The carport has 8 / 5 foot steel spikes holding it down.
#2. It was already tall enough to get my backhoe under it.

If you attach some of the foil backed insulation made specifically for metal buildings to the tin roof, it will help a lot.

Also, painting the roof with Cool White mobile home roofing paint will also help.

Fans are a good idea.

An air conditioner would be nice.

Quote from: POSTON WIDEHEAD on June 10, 2018, 01:41:43 PMThe heat is brutal in the summer.
True words.  We have had people go into various stages of heat related distress in the summer heat, with one hitting the ground, me telling others they needed to get into their cars and start up the air conditioners, one guy that I made sit down on the spot because he really looked bad, etc.
Although we and you and others are used to the heat, lots of folks aren't and can't take it during the mean days of summer.  We started putting our big floor fans out last week in the showroom for the customers to stand in front of, and now have a mini fridge with ice cold bottled water, free to any customer who wants it.  They use it too, because we went through a case of it just this last weekend.  I am now CPR and first aid certified.
From both a marketing and safety standpoint, the more comfortable the showroom, the more comfortable the customers.  We don't have air-conditioning in our place because of the big open doors, but many a day I've seen folks gravitate to the big floor fans and stand in the air flow in single file like a Conga Line.

Its HOT......sawing jobs have slowed a little due to the heat.....but I keep telling myself
"one more board".

I finally got the inside wall done at the entrance.
The bottom part is nothing more that the first cut off of the logs I sawed the board and baton from for the top. I sanded just the dirt and crude off them and kept the darker look.
A cedar gable vent at the top and I was done.

The outside lumber on the walls are now done to 13% MC. Next week it looks like
baton will be going up.

Sawing orders and working on the barn when I can.

Finally got the North wall pretty much finished.
Its built from 22 inch W I D E Poplar. The cracks have 5/8's baton which is kinda hard to see but its there. I made sure to caulk around all my windows inside and out.
The small trim right against the perimeter of the window is Cedar but the Windows are
picture framed with stained Red Oak. 8 inch Poplar baseboard where the wall meets the floor.

Lots more to do.  :)

I got this idea from The boss / Jeff. I like his blade display on MR Truck and thats where I came up with this. A buddy split the blade in half with his plasma cutter and drilled holes.

I put it up on the doors this morning and I think it looks pretty good.

Started on the last wall this afternoon....the back wall.   smiley_smash   Then we'll run wire for lights and fan before the interior wall goes up.
Still hotter than the dickens in the South.  smiley_sun

Around here the carpenter bees would gather behind that sawblade and bore their egg holes. They know the woodpeckers couldn't get at them and they would have a chance for the next generation to survive. Then you would have a wall full of holes. I had an old CASE tractor sign on the north wall of my shop; musta had fifty holes in the wall when I took the sign down to stain the building. Now I've got a bunch of small windows in the board & batten since the woodpeckers had lunch...............

Good idea!!
Now you need 3 chunks of wood and a wooden checker board. One to put the board on and 2 to sit on.

Moving slow but steady because of the heat.

I have now got the back wall framed in.

......and the board and baton up. The fan really sucks the heat out thank goodness.

I then took a break from building and run the underground power.
tired of drop cords.

Got the wire and conduit covered and put down fresh gravel. Thats Kirk in the ditch.  :D

Then went back inside and decided on Hickory paneling for the upper part of the wall.
Each board was dry and was oiled to make the grain pop.

The wheels in my head are still turning on what design next.
Some trim to do and will be starting on the bottom of the wall and the fireplace.

More to come.

While I got you here.....check this pic out.  :D :D :D

Your Uncle and crew did a great job on building the library. I went and saw it 2 or 3 times.
Took tons of pictures and built a birdhouse from it. I actually finish the birdhouse on the day
Mrs. Graham passed away in 2007.
The birdhouse is built from Walnut and has been put up in storage since then, signed and dated.

I still have a lot of BIG things to get done on my barn but doing saw jobs while its cooler in the mornings and working on the barn in the afternoon......its taking its toil.
Having to stop at 3 pm....can't deal with the humidity.

Today I did do a little work picture framing my light switches.

The baton will match the framed switches and  and let the Hickory paneling stand out.

Then I sat and looked at the fan and said now what?

I pictured framed

it in layers and then used old cookies I had laying around to fill in around the fan.

Slowly but surely.
