old sawyers

I know there's not many old mountain men , Sawyer's, and men who can do anything, that's my reason for writing this, I have an old Friend "80" years young that lives in northern Greenville county s.c. , named George Hyder, a man that can and who has done everything, he makes bowls , tables, saws lumber , he makes machines that carve bowls ,sets up mills rebuilds them and is a relic , anyone who is interested in this type of thing should take the time to get in touch with him before he's gone , not that I think it will be soon, he can out work me at twice my age, I just hate to see his wealth of knowledge, disappear when he passes on, I'm going to try and make it a point to go see him as much as possible from now on, anyone interested in going to pic his brain look at his collection of mills , carving, wood working.  And scrap iron, let me know and I will give you his information, he is always glad to have company and to show you around and is a great source for spare parts or complete setups, from bowl making to lumber to grading blacksmithing he can do it all, I wish someone with the ability would write a book with his knowledge, sorry for the long post. thanks guys, I just thought someone out there may like to meet him.

Your friend sounds like my pals, Willard Sawyer, of Robbinsville, NC, and Jack Shepard, of Concord, NC.  Both now long gone on to their reward.  So much knowledge and so willing to be a friend and pass on what they knew.  They added so much to my life, and to many others.  Regards, Clark

I really appreciate guys like that. I know a couple sawyers and one tree faller of the same variety. A day with them is like reading 100 books. If I were closer I'd go visit. Its really worth it. That's why I read the forestry forum, there are several right here.

I know where George's property is-- I've stopped in to try to find him a couple of times and never found him there. I did connect up with his son once, though, can't remember his first name. Had a good chat with him a few years ago. They are the real deal.
