Jeff called me and asked to make a post for him, he will be home later this weekend but wanted to get this posted. Jeff came in from hunting this evening put his gun on the bed so he could take his hunting clothes off, laid the clothes on the bed on top of the gun. He sat on the bed to take off your boots and forgetting it was there sat on the gun, braking the stock on his 35 Remington Marlin lever action rifle. He is looking for leads on where to buy a stock.
Jeff said no fat jokes :D ... it snapped like a twig.
i am going to do my best to not make any jokes, but DanG it, that is just to much 8)
I will get a web site tomorrow for a place in Kentucky that sells replacement stocks, fairly cheap.
:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D laugh_at laugh_at laugh_at laugh_at laugh_at laugh_at laugh_at laugh_at laugh_at laugh_at :D :D
Tammy,
You need to rename this thread "Brave or Stupid"... :-X
Coz I feel we're gonna see examples of both. :-\
I see Burl's made a good start. :o
asy :D :D :D :D :D
AWWWW MANNNN! He get's nothing but sympathy from me. That's some heavy duty misfortune! :'(
Good thing it did not discharge. Or is that as Paul Harvey would say " Now you have heard the REST of the story" :D :D :D :D
That is really sad about the gun stock. :( Make sure he checks to see if he bent the barrel. ;) ;D I suppose a bent barrel would not make any difference since he doesn't see any bear .
Bob
Not a good way to end the hunt , especially if the bear shows up. :'(
I 'spect da baar has a major tummy ache about now, and hasn't been movin about much lately. :) :)
Now he won't have that baar rug to snuggle up to this cold winter.............
hoosiergunworks@aol.com, email them and see what they say about a stock, friend of mine found a butt stock from them for an old stevens shotgun for about $50.
tummy ache from laughing? ya think some of jeffs problem was he was sharing that strawberry stuff and chocklate cookies with the bear?
I'll have to post a photo of that stock. It snapped like a graham cracker. It worrys me now that it might have been defective and could have broken while shooting. When I sat down it sounded like a paper bag crumpling. Its a real soft bed and there is really now reason for it to have broke as easy as it did.
Well, there is one reason. ;D
Der ain't no way I would have owned up ta sittin' on my gun ta this bunch. ::)
Ya shoulda said ya had a Boone and Crocket baaaar come in ta da bait da last day and da DanG gun wouldn't fire. :'( And in frustration ya tried ta wack da baaaar over da head, only ta have da stock brake. :(
Yup...Ya shudda done what Chet said.... :D :D :D
Welcome Back... ;D ;D ;D
Chet, I was surprised ya didn't get called for the use of the pickup and them chains that Jeff always gets stranded on bad back roads with. I was think'n maybe that gun was sit'n more like on the bed of the truck and he slipped in the snow and landed on that gun when jump'n up and down for traction. It might be a nice soft bed of snow, but not quite deep enough to cushion the fall on the gun. laugh_at laugh_at ;D
It must get pretty lonely at the old cabin , eh? :D
I knew I would get teased but ya should have been there. It was a freak accident not a fat accident. ;)
Kevin, yes it did. I kept waiting for the call. >:( ;)
Try The Gun Parts Corp. Used to be called something else like Numrich Arms I think. Located in NY state.
They have a catalog the size of a phone book. I have edition 21.
I don't see a model 35 but they have alot of stocks for Remington and some don't have a model #.
If you have the exact model # and maybe a pic I'll check and see if anything matches up for ya. ;)
DD
Might give Dick Williams gun shop in Saginaw a call. They carry lot's of used parts.
What about carving your own out of a piece of figured wood ???
I'm gonna be sawin' some BLM burl this week...Just let me know 'iffin ya needs a stock blank ;) ;) ;)
I'm not gonna warranty it fer........Overload conditions ??? ??? ??? :D :D :D
Is that "Bureau of Land Management", or "Burlkraft's little Maples"?
I know where there is some burls that would make nice blanks . ;D
Honesty is a very nice thing , but in a case like this ... I would of lied through my teeth . :D :D :D
Ya know, Jeff really was pretty lucky. That rifle coulda been standin upright on the stool he coulda 8) chose
Nice bunch, this lot, eh Jeff? ;D 8)
Sure is rough being the "but" of other peoples jokes.
Jeff - too bad I can't easily send you a piece of wood - I just scored some cocobolo - about 1,000 BF - can you imagine a stock of that stuff?! :o
I am guessing that many of us would provide the wood for a new gun stock, if you want to make one. What kind of wood would you prefer?
You know that's a great idea Patty (trying to butter her up here). I cut a three way walnut crotch a couple of weekends ago. It's got some beautiful grain if you'd like a blank to carve into a stock.
I sure wish I had the talent for that, or the machines for that matter. The inside of the stock for that lever action has a lot of detail where it mates with the rifle. I gotta go take a picture of the pieces. :D
As you can see the bugger broke like glass. Several small pieces.

GORILLA GLUE. Wipe often until it quits oozing. I would use it in a heart beat. It will NOT let go, might break in the wood again, next time ya sit on it, though. 8) ;D
and that is/was a beautiful piece of walnut.
After seeing the peice , I would do like Deadheader ...Put the gun and stock back together Glue and clamp it , same product and go back out and hunt some more . It'll be , more then likely stronger then it was before the incident . ;)
Get bunk beds ... put gun's on top bunk .... ::)
I know a guy with a stock duplicator. He goes by Able Arms. Pat Lewis is his name. He works out of his house and garage. Near Yankee Springs area. It will cost you more than simply ordering one over the phone, but if you can get a nice piece of wood, (dont know where you'd get that) and want something nice, it might be worth it. You wold put your old one back together with glue as suggested, then he mounts it up and the new wood and it cuts it to match the old. Hes an old hand at this kinda stuff. If you need the contact info let me know.
I'da lied my britches off! :D
John, that sounds like a great solution. I figure I need to replace the forearm as well to get a match on the wood. When we get back on our feet here and we can afford such a thing I think thats what I may do. Until then I'll try the glue. If I have to, I have a browning 30-06 auto I can deer hunt with. I hate it in the U.P. cold and snow though.
I almost think the wood was dried to much on this stock if that is possible. The wood seemd to be bone dry. Maybe thats what you have to have for stocks, I dont know anything about it, but I do know the wood is very very brittle.
That grain doesn't go very far before it runs out too. I guess that may be the penalty for haveing a some figured wood.
Not to test it, but, I would bet if you hadda turned it over before "testing" it, it may not have broken. That grain is very iffy for side strength.
I'm serious, that Gorilla glue is something else. I wouldn't be afraid of it. Your shoulder absorbs a LOT of the shock.
You never got a shot anyways at a Baar. ::) ::) ;) :D
And it aint very thick there. maybe 3/8s of an inch. I'm looking slimmer all the time... ;D Maybe I better wait to post my things I ate a bear camp thread eh? :)
I've been sold on gorilla glue for awhile. I even have some on hand. the only problem is getting the little pieces to line up.
I'm REAL good at putting little pieces like that back together.
Had lots of practice. :-\
Furb, come on up. I'll give ya my diet coke bottles for gas money. ;D
Wooden gun stocks can be fragile at times under certain "stress". I've had two break on me. One on a Model 12 Winchester, 3 " magnum. Just tapped the end of the stock on the floor and it splintered, even with a rubber butt plate on it. I had to order a new stock for it from one of the gun parts companies that provide such stocks.
The other was a Stevens 16 gauge single shot. The stock cracked lengthwise behind the hammer while shooting at a grouse. A gunsmith made a new wooden stock for it. They've been fine since though I don't shoot them as much as I use to.
I often notice at gun shows if one looks close they will notice restocked guns or cracked stocks on some of the used guns. Replacing the original stock may lower the guns value some, but not much choice though when it's broken and the gun isn't functional without it.
It's always good to have two "identical favorite guns" along for when you break one, especially on a bear hunt. ;)
Was a mile from your place the other day.........
You was still messing around in da woods.
Cut the barrel off and put a pistol grip on it. ;D
I had that Idea when I was holding it without the stock. kinda tough lookin. :D
I think it was that last gallon of ice cream..... :D :D :D :D
The Stockbreaker..........
Hey! I'll have you know there is still over 2 gallons in that 3 gallon tub and I left it at the cabin. Pete and Harold and I put a big hurt on the first gallon but we got hooked on apple grunt and peach cobbler and have left the blue berry waffle cone icecream alone for the last couple weeks.
Baar huntin sure sounds like a tuff sport ::) ::)
Yep. pretty rough. I'll go post a picture in the bear hunt thread I took the last week of hunting from the blind at the cabin. Its pretty rough to get the 100 yards to the blind (brush hogged trail) then climb into the blind (staircase) then sit there in the freezing cold. (heated with television)

You know the whole time you were sitting there watching reruns of the Andy Griffith show and feeding your face snacking on cobbler and what not that bear was parked in his camo den just behind that evergreen, sipping hot cocoa and watching you through a pair of binoculars. Now that you all have vacated the premises he is probably dining on blue berry waffle cone cone_1
No doubt laughing his but off about how he sabotaged your gunstock :D
If so, then he's a better bear then I am and he wins. :)
Just to clarify, I think it is a Marlin, lever action, in caliber 35 remington..... I was looking for something myself and wondered if I could find that. Need the model number to be exact. They are about $60 is what I am finding.

Gets ya there. Yep that is a pretty imformative site. Found a spring for my American Standard .22 pistol that has been broken for a few years.

If it were a 12 guage you'd have yourself a Defender. ;)
I don't know much about guns. Grandfather had lots of'm over the years.
Well da stock has arrived. It took a little doing but I figured out where all da pieces go. :D I'm pretty sure we can get this usable again. :)
for sittin or for shootin? ;D
I think I can git it shootable. Not sure about dat sitable part.
Just so long as da Boss don't confuddle the two, and sit when he shoots or shoot when he sits, he'll be OK.
Hard to run away from da Bear in a sitting position!
asy :D
Asy, speaking of which, you should see my portable blind. Tammy worries about me bear hunting from it. It is a folding chair with an attachement the pulls up and over from the back forming a small enclosure over me. She figures to a bear, I'm like a big fat sausage in a bun. :D
I'll try to take a picture of the rig to post. It only takes me about 30 seconds to set up and be covered, but I am in a sitting position with no way to get out quickly.
Here is a link to a place that has them with pictures.
http://www.scentite.com/products/2004-1.html
Yup, to a bear you would be a neatly wrapped and slow moving sandwich. ;D
Since I can't bow hunt for them because of my shoulder I figure sitting on the ground with them was just as bit a challenge. ;D With the meals we ate up there and all the bait I handled I had to smell appetizing to a bear, if there would have been some.
With the bad shoulders, can'tcha Cross Bow hunt ??
Yep, I sure could but I dont have one and they are quite pricey. More then I can afford this year.
HAHAHA That tent looks like a giant Bear-Meringue!
Seriously though, it looks good, but I'm with Tammy, I'd hate you to have to make a quick getaway from that thing!
Would be quite comfy though. Is it rain proof? So if it rains yer right?
asy :D
Its not rain "proof" any more then a tent with an open flap, but it certainly helps. :)
