Anybody ever managed a planted pine stand for timber and quail?  How did you do it?

You have to thin the stand to 50 square feet of basal area or less.  More like 40 square feet.  You have to get on a two year burn cycle.  Don't burn everything in one year.  Stagger the acreage so that you are burning half each year in patches.  This leaves the quail some escape and nesting cover.

They go excellent with grits and biscuits :)  Danny, about 100-120 trees an acre?

Depends on the age.  What would be the average diameter?

Lots of good info and links here:  http://www.georgiawildlife.com/node/2730

Here is a nice synopsis of what to do:  http://www.georgiawildlife.com/sites/default/files/uploads/wildlife/hunting/PrivateLands/QuailPages/3-Managing%20Pine%20Stands%20For%20Quail_revised%2006%2012.pdf
