It was traditional tool wood here locally and I think used for wiffletrees for horse logging and likely ox yokes. Now a days under utilized, as local tools are now ash. I like it as a landscape tree as well with the lime green hop-like fruit in mid summer. Nice to see a good use for it.  :)

I've never dealt with hornbeam. It sounds similar to our dogwood. Do hornbeam trees get very big?

They can get to 12 - 16" in diameter here, but normally they are about 8 - 10" in diameter.

Purple,

That is fantastic work.  I am very impressed  ;D.

Looks great!!  I'm curious about the wood as common names can sometimes be interchanged.  Is this Carpinus caroliniana, smooth gray bark or Ostrya virginiana with the rough bark?
Beautiful work and thanks for showing it.  I hope you keep showing your projects.

Nice looking vise. That wood takes a finish. My Father always talked about hornbeam. I think there is a piece of it still behind the door of the farm house. He cut it down and cut off about a 5 foot piece of the tree. Still has the bark on it. I think that was 30 years ago. I can still hear him talk about hornbeam.

The wood I used is Carpinus caroliniana. I think I will have to cut some more.

Ah, I had thought O. virginiana as you were in NY. Never seen Carpinus caroliniana before, other than a book. I think we call that blue beech up here.

I was just curious since we're "neighbors" I know there is a bunch of both types around.  (Carpinus caroliniana) blue beech-muscle wood is very hard for me to find that big. Hophornbeams I've seen plenty big. You've done a great job.

If I decide to start a farm, maybe I'll go with a yoke, but as of now, I have more immediate (ie, within 3 years) plans of building a new workbench. So a big wooden screw will likely trump the yoke. :)

Ah, well the screw will come in pretty handy to, when you make that yoke.  ;D
