Forgetting to disconnect does not leave you on the list of who is on-line.  The forum keeps track of data movement from itself to a given I.P.. If you are logged in, but have not looked at a new page, which means no data transefered, you will drop off the list at 15 minutes.

Some people wonder why they are almost always first in the list, well, its because the list is compiled by the order of data transfer requests to the server. You are only first on YOUR list.

Or, your browser caching, or lag and not picking up your cookie until after the intital page info was being displayed.
