Title: 2012 Annual Forestry Forum Christmas Contest.
Post by: Jeff on December 14, 2012, 10:16:21 PM
Topic has been updated to show the winners of the 2012 Forestry Forum Christmas Contest

Congratulations!

Seeing as thecfarm put my feet to the fire this past week, you can blame him that this year's contest is more diabolically difficult than any before it. But hey, that's the way I roll anyhow. ;D

This years prizes:
Brucer - First Prize: Choice of 60" Logrite Peavey or Cant Hook. THANKS LOGRITE TOOLS!
reride82 - Second Prize: Bluecreeper Value Pack
reride82 wanted to donate his prize to another person in the hat, as he already has some Bluecreeper on hand, so I drew another name
Tom L You are the 2nd place new winner!

Radar67 - Third Prize: Logrite T-Shirt
Estiers - Fourth Prize: Forestry Forum hat and coffee cup combo.
Jueston - Fifth prize donated by thecfarm, Four jars of The C Farm Jam and jelly. All are 8 oz jars,Raspberry,Blackberry,Strawberry Rhubarb, and Blueberry.

Entries have to be received by Midnight Christmas Eve 2012 (Eastern Standard Time), and winners will be drawn from those entries on Christmas Day.

This year's contest begins with a wordsearch puzzle, using some of the most prolific Forestry Forum's member names, with a couple three other words mixed in for good measure.  :)

How to play.
1.Use the puzzle link below to view and print out the puzzle.
PUZZLE LINK (https://forestryforum.com/christmas-contest.htm)
2. Find all the names on the puzzle
3. Use the unused letters in the puzzle to reveal the SECRET MESSAGE
4. Use that Message to find where you must go on the Forum to complete the contest. Use of the Search function will be most helpful. Once you are there, you will know it, it will be clear you have reached your destination.
5. Follow the instructions found with the SECRET MESSAGE to complete your entry.
6. If you do everything correctly, your entry with the correct information will be sent to me for the drawing.

Helpful Hints:

1.IMPORTANT! Make SURE your puzzle prints out in its entirety. After it prints, check it against the one on screen. Make sure you have all the rows of letters.
2. Keep your puzzle legible. Be very careful about circling words. If you circle extra letters, or can not tell what are the extra letters, you will not be able to reveal the SECRET MESSAGE correctly. Drawing a line through the letters may be a better way to go. Tammy recommends using a narrow highlighter.
3. Use the extra letters starting with the top and going left to right. You will have more letters than you need at the end.
4. Use the blanks given on the puzzle print out. This will show you how many words, and how many letters in each word.
5. Read all the instructions where ever you find them. Its the simple things that will foul you up. :)
6. Take full advantage of reading glasses, a magnifying glass or a telescope. Or, better yet, get a kid to do it for you. :D

Good Luck, Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and HEEHEEHEEHEEHEE! ;D :D :)

And thanks again to Logrite tools for this year's prizes. :)

If you are reading this, and you view the Forestry Forum as a guest, and want to play, this is a good time to get registered so you can join in, as you need to be a member to be able to complete the entry at the end to have a chance to win a prize. :)

PUZZLE FIX!!! It seems that there are 3 words that appear twice in the puzzle, purely by random coincidence in the puzzle creation. I am going to give everyone the  locations of the wrong words. You still have to find the right ones.

EDK  starts 24over and 5down and runs east
ELY   starts 26over and 7down and runs Northeast
NORM  starts 4over and 4down and runs west

An additional note. Some usernames that had spaces, numbers, or special characters were shortened for the puzzle. As an example, the guy with highlighter on his screen. ;)

Jeff- Just to be clear, in the quote below did you mean "with a couple of three LETTER words" as opposed to what's written below.

I don't think so, but maybe I worded it funky. I just meant some words are included in the find list that are not member names, such as "Christmas"

i thought maybe because i won last year i would get an honorary place in the list... but i guess not...  :D

Title: Re: 2012 Annual Forestry Forum Christmas Contest.
Post by: Jeff on December 15, 2012, 12:06:00 PM
To create the list, I sorted the database to show me members with the highest post counts, and then some adjustments had to be made from that in order to actually make the puzzle come together. Some names from the top were dropped, and some with lower posts were added depending on what I needed for letters to make things fit  :)

Gives a guy something to do to stave off cabin fever whilst the weather is too yucky to want to make some sawdust, and a big thank you to Logrite for putting those new shiny thigs under the tree! Now to de cipher this confounded message!?!?The word search was the easy part!! ???

While putting it together yesterday, and then testing, we found an inadvertent extra yooper. :D  "Chet" had worked his way in there twice. The inadvertent yooper, if selected, and it surely would have been, totally screwed up the secret message by using letters that were supposed to remain unused. The only way to fix it, was to start over. Durn that Chet! :D

If you find someone that is not on the list within the puzzle, you may want to compare your printed list with the one online to make sure your printer didn't skip it. :)

Hopefully I got everything submitted correctly. This was a tough one and I'd hate to lose my new LogRite on a technicality :D

1.  I got nailed by a technicality or that....
2.  You are not responding to our entries regarding their completeness and accuracy.

Beenthere - Yes, CustomSawyer is not Tom.

The only way I could get through that puzzle was to enlarge it with my office copier.  I was operating today and had too much time between cases.

I'll say, once you get the names, the secret code is easy, long as you didn't inadvertently mark extra letters. You simply start at the beginning and put the extra letters in the blanks. No trickery there. So, I think the second part is easy. :)

The wording in the secret message is clear and fits nicely into the blanks provided.

Then the search function --  I'll leave it there as I don't want to give any clues - like Ovaltine, and butchered.  ;D ;D

Don't want to do it if I need clues.  I'm happy just continuing to try to work it out.  8)

I recommend using the search from the menu line, not the search box at the top of the page. For some reason, it doesn't always return things it should. Over the years, I've considered just removing it, but never have.

We did go back over the puzzle and found those randomly created duplicate extra words. I posted the location of those wrong words in the first post of the topic. People still have to find the right ones.  We have had 30 people make it through so far, so even with those other words in there, it is still very possible to make it. :)

It's funny how this puzzle works with your mind.
I used the zoom feature on my puter and zoomed onto the puzzle. If you spend a lot of time on the Forum, the names start to get embedded into your mind. So when I zoomed on the puzzle, they seemed to stick out like a sore thumb.  :D

The hardest one for me to find was......are you ready.......believe it or not.......WDH.

It was hard to fine just 3 letters.  :D

We created a master copy that has the columns and rows numbered, with the names identified, along with their associated quadrants and direction of travel. It was still tough finding those extra words you guys identified.

The extra Norm seriously messed me up, since both Norm's were in the message area. However, I was able to ask my wife, who had completed the puzzle before me (in spite of the fact that she has no frame of reference whatsoever for most of these names  ::) ). She had also circled one or two of the wrong words, but managed to figure out the message anyhow. She thought there were just extra letters in there.  :-\

WDH was one of my toughest ones too, but the last two I found were Dan Shade and Larry. Dan Shade was also one of the last ones for my wife to find.

Is the second ely independent of any other word, or within another word?

The "extra" ely runs perpendicularly to three other names. It is not contained within one name, but three. If you circle the wrong one, the right one will become apparent once you begin circling the leftover letters.

Tom was the hardest for me to find.

i somehow ended up with a few extra letters in my secret code, but once i put all the letters in a line i could pick out the words and see the extra letters....

but i agree if you spend enough time on the forum a lot of these names pop right out at you, i didn't even have the read the list for about 1/3 of them. the ones i found hardest were the ones that weren't words like wdh  or ianab

but eventually i got it done.  8)

This contest is a lot like finishing drywall. There is a secret to getting it done and I found the secret. It took me three days to find the secret to finishing drywall, but I am getting smarter. It only took me two days to find the secret to finishing the word search puzzle. Let someone else do it. 8) My wife took one look at the puzzle and said " Jeff made it easy". :o It was not long before she had it finished. I did the hard part and used the secret message to finish the contest. ;D   I just hope I was smart enough to send it in correct. ::)

I am getting ready to quit, 7 hrs so far, puzzle is done. rechecked twice, got the first 12 words, the last two are almost impossible   :rifle:  nothing makes sense to me
Title: Re: 2012 Annual Forestry Forum Christmas Contest.
Post by: Roxie on December 22, 2012, 11:40:18 AM
Don't give up!  I just finished it, and I think this is the hardest Christmas contest ever.   :D

I had to work on mine a little at a time with my morning coffee.  Cowboy Bob said, "What are ya trying to do, split the atom?"

By the way, I printed mine out in landscape format, and once I saw that there were two Norms, it began to make sense.
Title: Re: 2012 Annual Forestry Forum Christmas Contest.
Post by: Brad_bb on December 22, 2012, 12:11:04 PM
If all else fails, there is a the systematic approach.  Methodically go row by row and find the first letter of the word, then look at the surrounding 8 letters for the second letter of the word, etc.  There is also the cover up method.  use a sheet of white paper to cover the adjacent row or column to help you focus on that one row or column you're looking at.  It will make that row stand out and easier to see words. You can do the same on the diagonals too, though they are harder.
Title: Re: 2012 Annual Forestry Forum Christmas Contest.
Post by: beenthere on December 22, 2012, 12:28:24 PM
And the next step to make it a bit more systematic (from Bradd_bb letter search) is to put it in Word, and use the "Find" function.  Even then, it takes some time.

But as pointed out early in the contest, carefully striking through each letter of the name found so those not struck out are easy (easier) to find for the secret message. I at first thought there were two messages, but after considerable frustration decided only one.
Title: Re: 2012 Annual Forestry Forum Christmas Contest.
Post by: Jeff on December 22, 2012, 01:10:01 PM
There really is no secret to the secret message.  The unused letters are placed in order within the blanks given. If it does not form a complete sentence, then there was a problem with your word selection.

Me? I won? Wow :o.

Thanks to Logrite: for providing the prize, for being a Forestry Forum sponsor, for making great products, and for providing outstanding customer service :).

Thanks to Jeff: for running the best forum on the web, for putting up with all of us, and for another great challenging diabolical contest :D

Thanks to everyone on the Forum: if it weren't for all of you, I wouldn't have been here to enter the contest ;D.

Mind you, I think I earned it. I hate word puzzles like that. I'm terrible at them.

This time I thought I'd be smart and use the computer to help me. Cut & paste the diagram into Excel. Reverse all the lines so all the backwards words jump out at me. Then make all the vertical lines horizontal, and reverse them. More words jump out. Then turn the diagonals into horizontal lines and ... wait how the heck do you do that? And even if I can pull it off, how am I going to figure out where the word started anyway?

In the end it was "easier" to just go hunting for the words. Fortunately I have a stubborn streak or I would never have hung in there.

I hope everyone had a great Christmas.

the package did arrive on friday, at first i didn't remember that this package was coming and i was concerned, the package was a little beaten up, the hand writing was a little sloppy, and it had a fragile stamp on it, in the army they told us those were the signs that the box might be a bomb or anthrax attack...  :D

Drat, snubbed again :'(

Danny and I wood appreciate it if next year's contest involves the identification and recitation (from memory) of the scientific names of multiple obscure woody plants native to the Southeastern United States. That ought to narrow down the field a bit ;D

Just kidding, congrats to the winners and many thanks to Jeff and to all who donated gifts to make the contest possible. Happy belated New Year! :)

I would think that it would be quite a job just making up the "search-a-word".

One month later ...

I promised Tammy I'd post a picture of my new cant hook when it got here (not it didn't take THAT long). The thing is, when you ship stuff to Canada, even gifts, you have to watch out for brokerage charges. Everything that crosses the border has to be brokered across. The big couriers usually provide this service automatically -- and charge you a bunch for doing it >:(. They don't bother to mention this to the shipper, because technically it's the receiver who is importing the goods. On the other hand, if you send the article by mail, Canada Posts charges a very nominal fee for brokerage services and the USPS will usually warn the sender in advance.

Fortunately Tammy already knew this and was planning to mail my cant hook anyway. I told her not to rush, as all I could do with it right now is measure how much snow is beside my mill ;D. The prize arrived several weeks ago but I didn't manage to get out to the milling site until late last week.

Here's my new cant hook, alongside it's smaller and much older brother.

And here's how deep the snow was last week (both cant hooks are in this picture, too ;D ).

That's the sawmill behind the two cant hooks (you can see the mast over on the left). This is actually a pretty mild winter so far. A few heavy snowfalls, and then weeks of no precipitation at all. The skiiers alternate between joy and depression.
