Title: Plunge Cut - Difference Between Saws?
Post by: lxskllr on December 17, 2018, 08:49:57 PM
Finished my real job early today, so I went out to clear a pasture at work. There was a snag at the mess I was cleaning up, so I thought I'd try a plunge cut. Never really did one before, and I wanted to try it out before I start cutting a bench in my oak which will involve two long plunge cuts.

Tried my echo first. Normal echo bar, with yellow full chisel Oregon chain. I got it going, but I thought it was a little slow. Later when I had my 362cm in hand, I tried it with that, and it was exponentially easier. It almost went in by itself. Full chisel Stihl yellow chain, and an ES bar.

So, my question is what was the difference? Based on normal cutting, I don't think full 3/8 chain is that much faster than the lopro to account for the difference. Maybe the smaller nose on the echo bar? A combination of the two?

On a MS362 the LoPro Picco chain wouldn't keep up to that bigger saw plunge cutting. It's little cutter gullets wouldn't be able to carry and clear chips fast enough.
It and the smaller radius bar nose would be smoother taking less time entering the wood while plunge cutting.
