I heard about this site on the radio today, all about using common day items to make cool stuff.  This page is all about ingenious ways POW's and others have used regular day to day items to make remarkable things.  Check out the stuff towards the bottom--a glider made in WWII out of sleeping bags by POW's!   8) 8) 8)

Here's a direct link to the glider:  http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/naziprison/glid_building.html

The HISTORY channel had a dcumentary about the glider and the prisoners in the camp. Toward the end the old prisoners helped design a replica of the glider from memory. It was genious, but these men knew there stuff too from their training. ;)

I remember seeing that documentary on PBS.  What a story!  The neat thing was that so many took the risks involved in building it, but only 2 could possibly escape with it.  To me, everybody that even knew about it was a hero. 8) :) 8) :)
