just cut a 10.5 foot,12 inch diameter black cherry.verystraight log.im wondering if it is worth selling for a saw log or cutting into firewood. ???
That should make some good lumber if it is the butt log. :)
I think you should talk your dad into hauling it to a sawmill and get it cut into lumber. My son is not yet 15, but if he does stuff like that at that age, I would pay him to make me a bench or a table or something like that. It would make a very cool piece of furniture to talk about for many years. Would be the best spent $$$ for sure.
Just my $0.02
ps: when I croak he can have it back anyway ;)
Futureforester,
welcome to the board,
look around here on the board, there a few folks from western NY
who could saw it for you,
If you were closer to CNY, I would saw it with your help.
DGD
Cherry is purty. Welcome to the forum. 8) ;D
Howdy future, its not a real big one but big enough to saw, it should be worth more than firewood to someone, I would say 15-20 bucks worth, david
Being in the PNW, black cherry is not common at all. It kills me to even consider a straight black cherry log, even a small one, for firewood. How bout I trade you a 10.5 ft 40" western red cedar for it? ;D I would mill it no matter what...
Welcome to the Forum, Futurer Forestor, Unless someone offers you 100. bucks
keep it! You can use your chainsaw and a 2x8 guide board, very carefully take
a Slab off each side, then turn the cant 90 degrees and repeat the procedure.
You will end-up with a nice cant, plus four nice slabs. Then put your your wood in a dry spot out of the sun light with plenty of ventilation and well stickered so
the slabs won't warp, should be covered if stored outside to keep moisture off.
In due time you'll run into some one that has a small mill to saw the cant up, or you may even get your self one. On E-bay they some times have a chainsaw attachment that clamps on the bar to give you more control sawing. called
Board Master, with a sharp saw you should do that in short order! Watch out this is addictive also! Best of luck! LUCK=Labor under control knowledge!
Welcome to the Forestry Forum, futureforester. :)
Not trying to rob a thread, but Ayerwood, I would love to have some WRC, not sure how to go about getting it, and does it come smaller than 40"s? :o david
Welcome to the forum, Futureforester.
I'd get it sawn or possibly find someone local that you could help saw it, and then either at home or school make something with it so you could tell folks that you did every last bit of work that went into it.

futureforestor welcome to FF! 8)
I have a few black cherry myself. No way would I consider them for firewood!
Welcome to the forum.
Sadly before I had my mill I cut up a very nice black cherry tree. It did go to a great cause though, its great in my wood-fired pizza oven. Its great coaling wood.
It might be hard to sell just one log, but you could try, especially if it is not from your dooryard. I've sawn many thousands of feet of 12" diameter cherry, a straight log that isn't too knotty will produce some very nice lumber.
Welcome to the Forum! :)
Welcome futureforester. We need future foresters. (Somebody has got to replace me :D).
Welcome Future forester...I was born and raised in your neck of the woods. Whereabouts in WNY you at? Where I'm from, thats firewood. Cherry grows like a weed throughout Alleghany and Cattaraugus County and surrounding areas. Not to say it wouldn't make good lumber, cause it would. Maybe go and thin a few more out and then find a sawyer. in the end you'll have enough cherry to build what you want and some left over to sell.

I use the limbs for that. :)
Futureforester, welcome to the forum. Around here, a cherry log would go on the sawmill with no question. See if you can find a local sawmill that you can take it to. Then stack it for air drying and forget about it for a year or two. You'll have some great wood when you're ready for it.
Keep us posted, and as WDH says, we need more foresters!
Seems like no matter where we go in the world, someone else has the logs we would give anything to have. ::)
That's a very true statement, Chuck!
To Whom it May Concern.
I LOVE CHERRY.
Thanks for all the input guys!!!!,really helps me get an idea about use for this type of wood.i will look for a sawyer and bring the wood in to shop class to make into something!thanks!!

Really? :D
Your 12" cherries up there are more worth cutting than our 12" cherries down here. It ought to hold together better during the drying process. Around here, 12" is a pallet cherry log to me, because I can't get anything smaller than about 14" to behave when it dries. The more northern specimens seem to do better. So go find you someone to mill it for you.
It doesn't have any nails in it, does it?

Hey Futureforester,
I like that idea. Be sure to take some pictures of the process and post them. People here love to see project like that.
