Thanks Caveman.  I had the simple set at 1 7/16th today, but when I start quarter sawing the cant, I will do 1 3/8th. 1/8th over is what I do for SYP framing lumber.

Another question......Yellowhammer has a video where he quarter sawed a square cant after cutting it in half.  Yet in his posts, he says go octagon.  Which is better?

may be a smaller log.  the octagon he refers to as a gun barrel.  the key I think is that you can rock and roll the log and the pith is centered at each end so you do not need to keep adjusting as you go.  so, a cant will do the same.  you may get wider bords in spots with an octagon.

Inventory plus the lack of sheds is what put me out of the selling business and into the sawing only business.

I buy nothing, saw nothing on speculation, and sell nothing.  That business profile is certainly not for everyone, but it has worked for me for over 20 years and over 3 million bf sawed.

I consider the longer shorter, thicker, thinner described by Howard, to be woodworking!   ffsmiley

Good point. That's why they make glue, clamps, table saws, planers and epoxy.

The rains and wet ground are wrecking havoc with all of my sawing plans.  Last week was pushed to this week and this week has been pushed to next week.
Even so, the forecast looks iffy for next week.  whiteflag_smiley

I beat up on the Water Oak today.

I also dodged a nail by 1/8th inch.  Only lost about 3 boards cause there was metal I couldn't locate.

Octagons tilt real easy.

I helped a neighbor a few years back to get 18 beautiful black walnut that had been on his land from the time he bought the 650 acre farm. He said they were decent sized in 1968 when he first moved in. They were along a field edge by the river with plenty of water and direct sunlight for the entire day. The smallest was around 20" at the small end and he wanted to give me half for helping him. He is 85 but I told him he should just keep all of it for his kitchen and dining table/chairs project. I couldn't bring myself to cheat him that bad and take advantage of his good nature. Wow they were very nice logs. I did cut some very nice red cedar that will be getting the benefit of my new mikron setworks when i get it installed on my mill. I have 10 tulip poplar that I wil be using to make sure everything's right before starting the cedar.

How about documenting the Mikron install with pictures and giving us a report.

I think it's stuck in customs but it's only been there a couple of days. Don't know how long it will take but the last time I ordered from out of the country it took about a week for customs to clear it but I would be happy to document the install on my 2003 Timberking B20. I did tell them it's for the B20 and the kit is supposed to be customized for it. I would like to think it will make my investment worth it. I don't have any business plans for my mill but just the few projects I have planned will save enough money to at least break even and from there it's all gravy.

The Mikron would certainly get some serious consideration if my old non-supported SetWorks ever died.  Less than $2k vs over $4k for AccuSet 2.

Old growth cedar for a Friend to repair his dock up the coast and some more Douglas fir.

Earlier this week I sawed up a bunch of logs I recovered as a result of the county clearing the right of way on my property. None of the logs were anything worth writing home about, but I still managed to get some 2x4, 2x6 and 2x8 plus some 1x to replenish my stash for personal use.
Everything went great and I think I cut some of the best wood I have ever cut. The saw was running great and cutting really straight. Especially considering most of the wood was Red Pine. Another great thing is that none of the wood has stained (so far). Every other time I had cut RP it has been warmer out and it immediately would begin to stain. I think its because the trees were dropped early enough that the sap hadnt started running plus cool weather and low humidity.

I did get one small maple log that I sawed. It was too small but figured Id saw it just because I dont get much maple. When I was sawing it I swear it smelled a little like fish??

TimW I alaws saw according to the WM scale on the mill. I set my SS works for hardwood @ 1.25 and then the board comes off the mill at 1 1/8". 5/4 is set at 1.5" and it comes off the mill at 1 3/8".
Some will cut that down at bit, 1/16' , if they have good stacking and stickering and KD, or they use the wood for themselves and know they can shave a bit off.
The soft wood scale is 1 1/8" and the board comes off the mill at 1"

I would much rather be sawing than doing this crappy carpenter work.  It takes me back to the reason that I bought a sawmill 22 years ago.  ffsmiley

I was just trying to find the exact extra shrinkage of quarter sawn wood over straight cut wood for the simple set settings.  I read on here somewhere quarter sawn shrinks more.

I think quarter sawn shrinks more in thickness and flat in width.  if you look at the grain, it is the same base on grain orientation by %.  but thick at 4/4 by % is less overall vs width.  so, a smaller number, if that makes sense.  flat will tend to cup more as it dries.

I got two texts yesterday wanting to know "when"?

I told both of them "when I finish the job that I am on".  I did not tell either of them that the job that I am on is PatD's deck rebuild.  :wink_2:

Cut some Magnolia yesterday evening for a customer. I guess 6" mantels are in style now? My wife has requested the 4/4 boards be used for a boxed beam in the living room.

Magnolia is some strange but beautiful wood with those blackish streaks.  I call it "character".
