why is my starter cord binding

1st off, welcome to the forum.
Is the rope to big or too long? Either one will make that binding issue bad. How old is the saw? What type is it? These are just a few of the things that we would like to know to help you out. A few pictures from different angles say a thousand words.
Trying harder everyday.

I just rebuilt my ms290 with a kit I believe is making it a 390. I used all the original parts that seemed in good shape. When trying to start it, it seems to pull and them eventually binds up.

When I take the pull mechanism off, it looks fine. I then turn the crankshaft with a wrench and notice it turns but has some points where it seems to bind.

Try tapping the ends of the crank to center the bearings. Something is misaligned
old age and treachery will always overcome youth and enthusiasm

Check the distance from flywheel to ignition coil. Should be around .3 mm. (1/85 inch)
