I picked up this very interesting piece of red oak from a local tree service that saves "special" pieces for me.  My slabber will only accept up to 4ft. wide and it took about 2 hours to whittle it down so it would fit on the mill.  It took about 5 minutes a pass to slab it once I had it on the mill. Somebody is going to get some awfully nice tables once this stuff is dried in a year or two.

I thought I had milled some knotty logs.  I'm gonna have to redefine my notion of what constitutes "knotty"! :D

The definition of log has been taken up a knotch, That must of been something to limb, sawing is taking it on another level, let alone drying it.

How thick are you cutting this to  ???

Nice!!! We slab them like that... we usually slab them 4" thick like that and weigh them down in the stack after stickering them really good to help them stay a little flat... we do them 4" thick so there is room to surface them after drying and them moving...

keep them flat and weigh em down, you will end up with some nice slabs after drying them for a while...

I have been cutting the slabs at around 3" thick.  We are coating both sides with beeswax end-sealer and then stacking them on top of each other with 1" stickers between.  We then let them air dry for a year or two. We have had great results with this method and made some mighty fine tables with just light planing.

We have gone to thicker 1.5" stickers. This has sped up drying a bit and taken care of the larger bug issues. I think the extra space helps keep the roaches and things out it also allows the lizards more spce to get in and eat them. This is FL after all it is a bit buggy in more ways than one.
