Spike60's McCulloch and Jonsered..nice mix of new vs. old saws. (more to follow)

That was taken on Christmas eve morning. Buddy/logger is working just 5 miles from my house, and I can go and cut up as much of the tops as I want. That's the second of two loads I cut that morning. Most of that was cut with the ProMac 60. I like running the vintage stuff now and then. First load was cut with a 2153. Being that close to the house, I switch saws for each load. Yeah, it's silly, but it's one way to get some trigger time on all these saws.
The 2186 road along as backup. Overkill for that size wood, but it had gas in it so it made the trip.
Was planning on going back tomorrow, but yestarday's snow and a problem with the skidder shot that down.
Picture hit me kind of funny, [1969] i trader a 1010 McCulloch in for a 601 Jonsered, the new 601 was $165.00, they were really a smooth running saw compared to a Mac or the Homelite.
The 10 series Macs were kind of odd .Some were smooth as silk and some would rattle the teeth right out of your head and make your hands numb after about 5 minutes .For an older saw though the 53-57 cc 10 series of which the saw in question is really all considering are not bad cutters .
I still believe that had McCulloch not been interested in just selling equipment and done more moderenization using the basic 10 series porting design they could have been a player yet today .Didn't happen though .Too many years of being top dog and they didn't take the competiton seriously.Sounds familiar--US auto industry.They done choked the goose that laid the golden egg .

There's a little hard maple in there, but that's almost all shagbark hickory. I grabbed as much of that stuff as was there. Two or three loads. The 670 probably did all of that load. I'm not sure if I even ran the Solo that morning.
The ProMac 60 isn't bad on the vibes and is pretty light, especially considering it's age, for a 60cc saw. I also have the 7-10A on the same frame at 70cc, and that thing really cuts nice. The 7-10A also isn't bad in the vibe department, and it has an awesome sound to it.

That's just the orange side of the family enjoying a nice fall afternoon on the deck is all. If I remember the order they were in: 44, 50Special, 246, 242XP, 254XP, 350/46, 346, 257, 262XP, 266SE, 266XP, 268XP, 272XP, 371XP, 372XP, 65, 285CD, 281XP, 288XP. Might have been a duplicate or whatever in there. Couple months ago, so who knows. 8)
It seems at least from my observation that the 10-10 size of the Macs are the shakers . The 70 cc's like the 7-10, 700 etc all seem to be pretty smooth as are the sp81s' .
Hard to say why exactly,might be the piston size ,could be on the old right hand start that the start mechanism threw off the balance ,don't really know .
I've often wondered if for reasons unknown the darned things got into a resonate frequency type of condition because of the RPM range .The great mystery .

That is a nice collection you got there.
I enjoy cutting with my older saws especially the 041 farm boss its like a ride in the country with an old Lincoln. Frank C.

Thanks. I can also do the deck in "red" with all of the Jonsereds. Actually a little more interesting in red with all the different models. Plenty of pre-elux all metal units.
Real curious to compare the two 920's with a real (and very nice) 930.
Spike how many of the Jonsered 490 do you have with the Jred being Jonsereds with the S still on it then add the heated handles in for a nice touch.
Whats the story behind this? About 99% of the 490 I see are spelled Jonsered way.

This is the only Jonsered I own and only because of my luv for the Partner 5000 saws. Just couldnt pass this one up to put on a shelf and I only get out for cold weather cutting or a gtg.
I lied, I do have another 490 with bad crank on the shelves and a 590 top end to put on something some day.

That's right your a Partner guy. Very few of them in my neck of the woods; there was never much of a dealer presence around to sell them.
I think I've got a decent 490 bottom end if your interested.

I just figured in my pea brain it had something to do with the rotating mass .The larger 70 cc saws didn't seem to shake as bad as some of the smaller like the 10-10 .Not all of those shook though .The ones that did would make your hands numb real quick .
It does seem that half the 10-10s were buzzy, worse than XL12s. Back in 78, I bought one that had full wraps, lefthand start, and the shorty reed muffler, it was nice and smooth. I quickly ditched the standard one I had, it buzzed, an hour was enough.
Yep they're odd ones .It seems though got better with time .I have a super 10-10 and one from the last year of production in the shed .They don't shake for some reason .Those however are the larger bore with pinned rings and unbridged exhaust ports like the 700's .Weather that has anything to do with or not is only a guess .
