Title: The Band Concert
Post by: Gary_C on July 04, 2010, 01:54:37 AM
On this fourth of July, I am reminded of the good old days in my youth of the traditional band concerts that were held every week in the summer at the municipal band shell. It was a nice traditional social gathering for families and kids thought the teenagers that had access to auto transportation thought it was a "dumb" thing of course.

Unfortunately I haven't been to one for many many years, though I do enjoy the Boston Pops and the concert in DC on the evening of the fourth on TV of course. And i do know there are still band shells in many many towns in the midwest, but what of other places? Are there band shells and summer concerts in other parts of the country?

The tradition is alive and well where I grew up.

They have several in my area.  The local one has a series of concerts throughout the summer.  Most of them are on the religious side, but there are a few that are orchestras.  They have 12 concerts throughout the summer, each on a Sunday.  No admission, but they pass the hat.
