I can say  that iv got my model 9 perfected to the point that the "brake drag adjusting screw" works well. If I back it out a ways my winch will bird's nest backlash the entire spool of cable when releasing a hitch...
A log in the hands worth two in the bush !

Thanks for all the responses fellas. Will try Polish Hammers suggestion, anything that easy is worth a try. I may stand corrected, it likely is a 119 as it is unsealed.

My problem sounds the same as many of you have indicated re: lack of use. I have run it in and out while latched onto a tree and it helps. I assume a small amount of corrosion / rust forms on the drum when not in use from condensation after a few weeks of sitting. Just enough to fill the gap between the bands and drum I suppose.

These gearmatics are great when they work but I would usually prefer to use it as an anchor. I'm sure the neighbours have heard unspeakable profanity yelled through the bush while using this thing.......😃

upnorth, this won't be popular but check your clutch adjustment. the clutch could dragging slightly causing it to be hard to pull off. i used to use a mid size screwdriver blade to set, factory spec is to tight. the other thing is clutch or brake band material breaking off and lodging between the band and drum. as you know they don't like to sit at all.

Just saying there is a $1500 Hercules winch for sale on Kijiji in Nova Scotia and the Canadian Dollar is at about 85 cents if you feel for a drive.

When there set up right they work just fine. Same as any winch. When These things sit they get sticky. When I had mine apart I used Teflon lube on everything but the bands. It goes on dry and doesn't drip. It seems to help with the corrosion and the winch sticking due to linkage.
