Sawing Hickory

   Well I didn't think I could avoid them any longer,and felt comfortable enough with this new mill (sawed enough to dull 2 blades without hitting anything on the mill) so I started on the hickories I got from the churchyard. Two things became immedeiately obvious, 1 them things are heavy, 2 them things are hard!!!  Fantastic looking boards,some over 16 in. wide.
   Don't know if I can keep them from warping or not, but I'm sure gonna try. I get the rindboards,the church gets the ties.Anybody saw multiple ties out of one log,some of these things are 35-40 in,and would make several

dail, how you like em hickories?I love sawing it, good looking wood and a nice smell to it.Ya might want to cut them 16" boards in half to help keep em from warpin and stick em on the bottom of a stack.

Dail_h,
Better check with the tie buyer before you try cutting multiple ties from those logs.  I think you'll find that they only want heart centered ties because the others tend to warp too much.  You can cut multiple beams from softwood, but it isn't recommended for hardwood.

Hickory! So far I haven't found it very profitable to saw. I have to saw slowly and use extra sharp teeth, plus most hickory logs seem to have numerous small knots and such in them.
On the up side, the wood is pretty and can have a lot of character.
I just sawed about 700 ft and dead stacked it all hoping to sell it quick but we got 4 inches of rain in one week and lots of the boards are now growing this white fuzz stuff. :(

Man I know what ya mean about the white funk...I was getting done one day and left 5-6 4/4 boads stacked on the husk of my mill...
a couple of days latter they were glued together again with that hickory monkey/glue ole hickory is tough...it will grow back into a trunk after ya cut it....
It slices like butter on a circle mill though ;)
