I'm looking to purchase a used Husqvarna 3120xp. What should I look for as far as Excessive wear & tear. Their asking a good price but I don't know much about them. I have a Mac 3516. Works great on limbs & branches. Should I run it til its hot. I hope to try it out on some logs, too.

If you can handle it, especially in wood, TRY to bog it down and see if the engine bogs with the chain.  If won't, you've got a clutch issue.  You can get a ballpark idea on compression by the handle lift test.  Hold the saw up by the starter handle.  Ideally, it'll hold the weight of the saw, or only let it fall slowly, and in a jerky fashion.  If it falls quickly or smoothly, you've likely got poor compression.  If you can take a peek into the cylinder, do so.,  Look for scoring.  Depending on how far you can take the saw apart, look at the clutch and flywheel.  They should be tight, and there shouldn't be any play.  If the saw runs strong and consistent in the cut, that's half the battle.

I am kinda wondering what you are going to do with that bad boy. It is Husky's biggest saw and a huge step up from the little Mac.. Are you used to a heavy, powerful saw?

Maybe he has a boat, or maybe a sawmill..... 8)

Here is my $.02 worth.
The Husky 3120 is strictly a professional saw.  Professionals don't get rid of a saw unless 1)its showing signs of impending demise after cutting 6 million feet or so of timber  2)they are getting out of the business.

Buying a USED professional saw in which its true work history remains unknown is a huge gamble. If you want to gamble, go to a casino.  At least you know what the odds are.

I missed out on one these guys when the owner got hurt.  It was in the local saw shop with no bar or chain on it.  I thought the  $400 price tag looke good till I picked it up.  No way could I have handled a saw that big for an hour, much less all day.  I changed my mind.

It sure made my Husky 61 look a lot better to me.  :D

My intensions was to use it to mill lumber. Hoping to purchase a logosol M-7 next spring. I really don't want to buy someone else's junk! I was told by a co-worker ( who has a husky) that they are tough saws. He said they will take a beating, and keep on running.

Thanks for everyone's input. I had to pass on the deal.
