Spring time is my favorite here in the Smokies.
Did a little walkabout in Big Creek in the GSMNP.
This area was the sight of an old CCC camp. As a hobby Sawyer, I often find myself looking at trees in an area. This country was completely logged in the early 1900's. Old timers knowledge is dying fast. I have found myself trying to pay attention to the native flora and fauna and identify as much as possible  and learn what I can't recognize.

This area has some impressive Sycamores, Seeetgums and poplars. Trilliums are almost ready to bloom!
These trees are about 30" diameter and very straight, very tall! I can just imagine the qs sycamore these would yield.

Very nice.  It would be difficult to visit the Smokies without looking up.  ffsmiley

There are some impressive trees up there.  The poplars get my attention!   They sure have grown tall and straight.

We enjoy the Smokies, Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge not so much.  The elk are fun to find and watch as is the drive through Cades Cove.

I am from that area and it never grows old. Another area I like is the Greenbriar area between Cosby and Gatlinburg.

The Roaring Fork Motor Nature trail is awesome, just have to go through Gatlinburg to get to it.

I live near the opposite corner of the park, I can't remember the last time I visited it.
I hate the crowds and many of the rules.

I do go to the Cherokee National forest (south) more often.

I know there are patches of old growth forest in the park but the easiest to access is the Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest.
I like going there in the summer, it's always much cooler there.

I have found many very small places that I don't have to deal with people to see.

There is place called curly cherry gap along the AT through the park. The trees are big and they all look like they have massive curl. Sadly they have lost most of the hemlocks up high due to the woody adelgid. The feral hogs also have been rototilling the woods which is messing up regeneration.

Nice! I drove (a friend drove me) through the Smokies on the parkway a few years ago.

These days my park is my woodlot, where I can tromp around and cut some firewood, a few fence posts if I need them and observe nature and take it all in. Never gets old, even though I'm still adding on the years. :)
