I could have started this topic in the outdoor board. I could have started it in the food board. I thought it might be most appropriate to start it here. I just returned home after a 16 hour marathon drive from the land of Magic Bucks and Southern Hospitality! I spent the last week with the Magicman at his storied cabin visitin and eating and visitin and huntin and eating and eating huntin and visitin. Miss Pat was also there couple of times to make this a most enjoyable trip. :)
And yes, there is a story to the topic title.... ;)
You know this post is going to require pictures, right? 8)
Who is this guy that showed up in a red sleigh truck bearing gifts??

Was someone's belly button talking to you?
One of these days as you are going to or returning from the land of Magic Bucks you could stop by the tallest mountain in Mississippi (806 feet. ;) ;) :D :D) and see the Banjo land. I am retiring from the state job in 2 months and planning on doing a little visiting myself. Hope you enjoyed your visit down south. Banjo
I consider this a mission trip. Wildflower had heard that her dear friends in the south were possibly freezing, so she went into action, and sent me to deliver the relief packages. There was snow the entire 1066 miles.

Was there a jar of pickled bologna in with the goodies?
Jeff and Magicman, you my friends are making me smile.
No, but i found out the issue there. I had given lynn an off brand jar. I never tasted it before hand. Wildflower loves pickled baloney and she told me she tried the jar we had, and that it SUCKS! So, there is still a shot at winning the south over with pickled baloney.
One would think that pickled baloney was right up there with GRITS as far as FF food goes.
I found out that no matter his presence here on the FF, and no matter how large he/you think he is:
He ain't bigger than the Mississippi River. Of course as with everything there is also a hidden story behind him crossing the Mighty Mississippi and adding Louisiana to his "traveled to" list. :D
WHEW! I sure am glad you got there in time, looks like everyone still has all their digits and nothings been lost to frost bite! :) I know better than to ask if everyone had a good time ;).
Glad a good time was had.
Actually these pictures were taken before the digits and good times happened. :D
This was supper day one. GUMBO! Lawdy it was good!

Oh! And we ate on this most of the week. Mardi Gras King Cake!
The cake looks like it's very tasty!
Ok folks so we'll put this in order:
1. Eatin', visitin'
2. Maybe huntin'
3. More eatin'/visitin'
4. Nap time
5. More eatin'/visitin'
6. Maybe more huntin'
7. More eatin'/visitin
Anywhere's close to right? :D ;D
:D :D Possibly one more naptime in there somewhere, but it looked pretty close to me!!
I actually think we only took a nap one day. We were in the woods A LOT We hunted long mornings and afternoon until dark every day other than Monday morning due to a pretty intense electrical storm. That was the day that Magicman took us for a drive. I mentioned that I had never been in Louisiana, and since it's close that was the goal. On the way, I got a text from Kitty, asking if I had recieved the box of hats I had purchased. I texted her back that I wasn't home, but Tammy had informed me that they did indeed arrive. My daughter Stacy was also texting me wanting to know what I had seen so far, or if I had any luck. We texted back and forth a bit as Lynn and I approached the bridge crossing at Natchez Mississippi to Vidalia Louisiana. We decided we both needed a restroom stop, so we would gross over to Louisiana, find a restroom, then head back to Mississippi. So of course, I sent Stacy a quick text saying I was "Going to Louisiana Just To Urinate".
We crossed over and found a Walmart, did what we needed to do, and started back. I was waiting for a smart alec reply back from Stacy, when I got a reply back from Kitty after I told her we had the hats. Her text simply said "Well, all-righty-then!"
We crossed back over and I mentioned to Lynn, that I was surprised not to have gotten a smart rely from Stacy as she lives for that stuff. I checked my messages, nope, nothing. Then it dawned on me. I went and looked. OH NO!!! Out of the Blue, I had told Kitty I was going to Louisiana Just to Urinate! The "Well, all-righty-then!" text was in reply to that!! Oh Man.. Anudder embarrassing moment. Those of you that are familiar with the Forestry Forum know that it wasn't my first. Just ask Kevin from Logrite!
Here is a picture of the bridge, as well as a picture of something I found most interesting in Natchez. Some extremely old Crepe Myrtle trees that had their roots completely filling the place along the old street where they grew.

Natchez is one of the very earliest settlements in Mississippi: Natchez (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natchez,_Mississippi)
You picked the wrong place to visit in Louisiana, the food is much better south :D
We only Peed. :)
We did hunt a bit.

Here is our setup the first morning overlooking Spring Hollow. This is the exact location where Jeff got his Magic Buck last year.
I believe I would have taken a Magic Chair. ;D
You can't tell from that picture, but that is one steep ridge, and my legs are pretty much hanging down. No where for a chair there.
We did use MagicChairs in a couple of other locations. ;)

Here we are set up on what I call Turkey Ridge, but we saw no turkeys. ;D
I'm having a struggle with my computer. This laptop has no memory and is struggling. I have a brand new laptop and I hope that what is wrong with it is that it is downloading all of the MS, etc. stuff. Anyway all of the lights are on and blinking but it ain't working. :-\
Now back to where I was, Yes, we did eat.

Pat and Marty came so we had us a Shrimp Boil, so we did not do too shabby BigZ La. food6

Here Jeff, Marty, and I toast Shrimp before digging in.
Monday is also the day we went and found the grave of the man buried standing up. An old graveyard you would never know was there if you didn't know it was there. A guy named Len Davis showed me where it was and I took a few pictures. Yes, Len Davis. I guess that is his get your name in the paper name. :D
READ ABOUT HIM HERE: LINK: http://www.msnewsnow.com/story/6666091/look-around-ms-graveyard
I took some pictures. The mound is where Ephrem Woods stands awaiting for the return of his savior. :)

Jeff, did Lynn tell you about Natchez-under-the-hill ?
I think we were standing over it, but not sure he did. I await the informing. :)
Can't help it if the reporter guy spelled my name wrong, Len Lynn. That was my first encounter with Fake News. :) That Cherrybark Oak growing out of Ephraim's grave was about 4" diameter when I was a teenager.
Yes we went to Natchez-Under-the-Hill. The first picture in Reply #19 was taken from there.
we have a Chinese guy buried standing up in one of our local cemetery's over looking the famous junction pool fishing spot here
When the mention of gifts was made, I immediately flashed back to that pickled baloney when I was at the cabin last year :) :) :).
It was inferior.
Pickled Baloney is probably what killed Ephraim and also why he was buried standing up. :o

Which brand is inferior? Or was it a defective batch ???
Ebels tastes awful. didn't know that. Not as all like the Koeglels we usually get

We spent every evening in the Straw House from which this video was made.

Is it time to eat again? ???
Time to eat! I think this was Tuesday evening. Stuffed pork chops! They were stuffed with a crab shrimp mixture. Very tasty. We also had a bowl full of pecan muffins we worked in for a few days.
This was also the evening I joined Lynn's "opted not to shoot" club. A very nice buck if it were at home. I had the joy of watching him walk in and walk out. The night before we had two good ones come in right at dark, but just couldn't be sure how good.

All sounds like a mighty fine time.
Koegel's is what in our fridge ;D :) I tried Ebel's once and was disappointed :(
I accidentally alienated friends from a northern delicacy by giving them an inferior version. I'm convinced they'd like the koegels, or at the very least, not hate it!

Jeff in the Straw House
On another food related note, I noticed this distinctively green patch in the Magicman woods and asked what it was and to investigate. Lynn told me it was known to him as wild onion. I sampled some and now I wish I had a patch!

Looks like CHIVES!
Wouldn't be surprised that is what it actually is!
Should be able to get some from any of the seed catalogs!
Just take a small sampling from Lynn's patch and get them in the ground, or in a flower pot when you get back home!
A very hardy plant!
They will spread as they grow year after year, dig some of them, replant them and make your plot bigger, faster!
That looks like an awesome visit! Food, exploring and friends. I did not, however, note any bourbon talk or pictures. What's happening down there? MM, I'm sure you MUST know of some stills out there in the woods. :o :D
If they are chives let me know. I will send a bunch of plants your way. They sure do spread.
I also have garlic ones too. They don't spread as quick. I don't have many garlic, yet.

Neither one of us are drinkers. Not even something that entered our minds.
Wild Garlic. He has that too, and I did bring some home. It grows around where there used to be share cropper houses but now nothing but garlic and daffodils WOW! I made the mistake of cleaning one off and munching it down. It hit bottom like a ton of bricks. Wasn't sure for a little while if it was going to stay down there! iT'S REALLY STRONG.

My hands now stink from taking that picture!
Where does your corn on the cob come from this time of year?
Thinking back, there was a still discussion. About how Lynn and his brother Sam found one. Maybe he'll relate the story.
Corn came out of the freezer.
Well Jeff that looks like a bad place for a dietin man to go hunting !!!!! ;D ;D Lynn must be real good at burning calories, I think i put on a few pounds just looking at the food pictures . ;D Glad all had a good time. Don
thanks for the synopsis Jeff.
Looks like a great time at the MMs
I have often wondered how Lynn stays so slender what with all the great food he posts
I brought home a fishing pole! I had to duct tape it to my truck to get the 20ft cane home. It made it unscathed, and I'll bet good and dried out!
We used cane poles back when I was a kid, don't see many around anymore!
Yes, my late Brother and I did find a Whiskey Still. We contacted the Sheriff who made a visit but we had left tracks and the still was gone. We expected to get a huge reward but even though an arrest was made, there was no reward. :-\
Those particular wild onions are as large as they ever get with the "stems" no larger than a toothpick. 'Bout like grass.
We explored and goofed off during mid-day but by 3:00 we were always back in the Straw House.
I am fixin to catch a mess of bluegills with that cane pole this spring!

Right! :D :D :D You'll make something really creative for holloween with that cain pole. ;D
Along with the 50 foot length of grape-like-vine I pulled out of a tree and coiled up and brought as well? (no, it was not hairy)
One of the favorite things i ate while at magicman's was something I'd never had. Sweet potato casserole. I neglected to take a decent picture, so I did the next best thing. Whipped some up from the recipe Lynn gave me! I've not tasted it yet so no idea if it rates.
You may not have taken a picture of the actual casserole but you have a "helping" on your plate in your Reply #41. food6
Mine is good! Not as good as Miss Pat's, but pretty good. I think I should have chopped my devil Nuys finer.
Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons all had a good place setting of deer in the field, and all 3 days something spooked them away. We didn't know what, although we knew there was a pair of trouble making coyote in the area, as we seen them run past us full tilt one morning in the direction of some calling turkeys. No shots at them.
Each night deer came back in right at the edge of dark. Tuesday night we had two bucks come in, but could only see the glint of head dresses, so had no idea how big, just that they had racks. One was a bit subservient of the other, so it was probaly the less dominant.
Every shift in the Straw House brought it's own brand of excitement.
And we spent a considerable amount of time with a binocular glued to our eyes.
The next day is Thursday, our last day to hunt !! :o
there is nothing good about a sweet potato they should be outlawed :)
Only if you are downwind of me after a eat a good bait of Sweet Taters. ;D
Thursday morning we were back at Spring Holler when we had a very memorable event.o
Out of no where a small ridge running deer appeared spitting distance from us, marked in the photo. It just popped over the old logging trail, took a few steps and stopped. It looked right at us, either not seeing us or not knowing what that camo clump was, hung a few more seconds, then down the side of the logging trail to continue on what ever mission it was on.
Lynn and I had several memory making moments while hunting this year. A great time every time out. We even gambled on raccoons.
It doesn't matter if you ever get a deer, the process and the friends that share in that is what is so rewarding.
Here we are that last morning perched on the edge of the ridge at Spring Holler.
I never thought about it, but cane poles are a territorial thing. My son in law was raised in New Mexico and was in his 20's when we stopped at a sporting store down at Austin Texas. He yelled at me to come look, and when I found him he was looking at cane poles, and said look at what they are trying to sell.
They had a patch of cane on the farm he was raised on, but he had never heard of anyone using a cane pole to fish with. I was raised in East Texas, and just took them for granted, where everybody and their dog used them.
I am back at the Cabin now. I'm trying to get that Black Locust job sawed and will spend the nights here.

Chuck - if and/or when you get down this way. I got 200-300 canes I need to thin. You are more than welcome to them. That goes for anyone else who may want some.

I've got a sunset to show from the last evening I was there, but I should post a couple other things first.
Lynn and I headed for the Straw House just before 3:00 on Thursday. I was resigned to the fact that I must leave early Friday morning to avoid the weather coming across the country late Friday so I could be sure to be home for a Doctor appointment I need to make Monday.
I think the first deer came in about 3:55. Lynn has a lot of time in those woods and can spot deer like nobody's business, so all week long, it was my goal to see a deer, any deer, before he did. I don't really think he knew that was my goal until I told him it was. :D I'm pretty sure though he was about 4 to 1 or better on being first, but there is such a vista out of that blind, its impossible to look everywhere at once, so hey, I'd just look where he wasn't and it gave me at least a chance.
I'm not sure how many deer we saw Thursday evening. I think there may have been 5 in the field. Other nights, we saw as many as 19 but that was one night that all the deer spooked out and then more came in. Some could have been repeats. I'd say our average must have been around 10 each evening.
So here it was. The last evening of the last day I could hunt. I looked at the clock and realized from keeping track the other nights, that we had maybe 10 minutes left of good light to see, then just a few more until legal hunting time was over.
We had noted that the deer in the field kept looking back into the corner into the woods, so figured more deer were going to come, hopefully before it got dark. Figured it was deer they were paying attention to because they were calm and feeding. Just looking.
I'm looking over in the corner on the side of the field in front of where Lynn was sitting, frankly, because he was looking into the corner in front of me. That is when He said it. Helloo Helloo!
It was on. Lynn knows the habits of his deer herd. He knew that as long as this deer had be standing back out of sight looking, and now coming in, it was confident it was safe. He told me "wait until it gets into the grass. It will come into the grass." I think he told me that more than once. I had already saw a glimpse of the antlers and was now trying to avoid looking at them to help myself stay calm. The deer came across the fescue and into the greener grass stopped for a moment, then began slowly walking. I had the scope on it, but it didn't give me a shot. It then stopped putting its head down. pointing right at us. Then a small doe walked right in front of it. I took my eye away from the scope and watched. Lynn says. get that scope back on that deer!
I was actually trying NOT to look at the antlers because I was afraid I'd start getting nervous. Amazing thing. I never did. At least I don't think I did. Lynn may remember differently :D Lynn says again, get that scope back on that deer! He may only give you a brief chance. It seemed like he stood there feeding, not moving, FOREVER. Finally, he turned, the other deer were clear, and I had a shot at his left side. I kept thinking DON"T BLOW IT JEFF! I squeezed the trigger and my buck went down instantly. No kicking, just dropped.
WE WERE EXCITED!! The last ten minutes of the last day, hunting hard very day and we got him! 8)
We walked out into the field to check him out. WOW! We got a few pictures but it was already getting dark, so we headed up to the cabin to get the 4 wheeler and trailer so we could fetch him. THe sunset I took the picture of was taken when we went up to get the trailer. What a day! What a week!

That's a nice picture of the deer and the stand. Good for you.
And by the way,I am still watching and counting down. :D
I have seen that last 10 minuets of Magic before. There is no way that you should ever give up until it is over and we didn't. That is a very nice 9 point.
Jeff had one more goal hidden deep in the back of his mind. :)
He also has several more very good pictures. I didn't have to tell him to smile.
Yup, 3 different years I've admired the wall of fame in the Straw House. Each empty cartridge is placed with the name of the shooter and the deer they shot. From the first time in there, it was my goal to get a spot on that board. I never really had any idea I actually would, but i thought about it every time in there. Well I made it!

Looks like you guys had a great visit for sure. Wonderful telling of the whole thing, puts a guy right there with you. As far as those onions go - yes they are strong, so much so that they will cause milk to have quite the onion odor to it when the cows get onto them hard in the spring of the year.
Very nice! Good shot.
Nice buck boss! Someday you both (along with your better halves of course) need to travel this way a bit. Can't guarantee anything real big but we'll see some, also pheasant, prairie chicken and maybe even bighorn sheep but that's still a plan as of yet although the other lobberheads already bought them ::). There was a plan to that although in the beginning I didn't know I was involved, details later. Just glad to see it was a successful hunt as well as a visit!
.....and Folks, thats what its all about! 8)
Wow, here I was disappointed for Jeff for four whole pages, before mention of a nice buck finally pops up. This has to be some sort of record for drawing out a successful hunting story.

I'm thinking between all the bucks I saw in the U.P. This past season, and the bucks I saw at Magicman's, it adds up to more bucks than I've seen in the previous 20 years.
Great story. Great trip after the server changeover!
Thanks for sharing!
All I can say is WOW!!
I did have one more picture that I took as Jeff was leaving.

Jalapeño blackberry jelly. Sounds like I want some! DanG that sounds good!
Done burned da screen on my phone! :o
I had some on my toast yesterday. BAM! :D
what no pics of this one on your kitchen table :D
I picked up a jalapeno chocolate bar once in a store in Port Angeles, WA. Took a big ol' bite - smooth, chocolaty, no kick to it at all ---- for the first 5 seconds, then it began to "finish" and OH MY, What in all that is holy did I eat? It was good thing I was not back in the truck when all of that happened is all I can say -likely would have ended up driving off the cliff into the strait just to get water....
Blackberry and Jalapeno, not one I'd thought of, but it sounds great. I have made Kiwifruit / Chilli , and Feijoa / Chilli relish. They come out as more of a pickle / sauce, with vinegar, but sugar from the fruit. Might be able to find some blackberries next month and give that a go.
I've got a block of Whittakers Kaitaia Fire chocolate on the desk right now that I got for Christmas. It's good stuff Kaitaia Fire is the local version of Tabasco sauce.
If you have a Sonic in your neighborhood, stop in and order a chocolate jalapeño shake. You might not see it on the menu, but they'll make you one. A very worth while adventure.
I have a jar of jalepnos (whatever ?) strawberry jam in my fridge, I love the stuff on pretty well anything. You folks sure know how to eat! :)

Whooo is dat?? :o
Good pic :)
Michelle has been working on her pepper jelly recipe as well as blueberry, black and ras. They are just about ready to send off to the state for approval so she can sell them. When she was working as an ag tech at NCSU they were trying to breed a pepper with the most capsicum (sp?) for industrial use like pepper sprays and such. She brought a plant home called NC Hot and planted it in the garden. When it ripened I was out there with her when she took a tiny bite. There was a blur that blew by me and the kitchen door was banging on its hinges :D I got inside and she had the milk jug up and was sucking the sides in. We didn't save any seeds off that one.
Who Dat?

I laughed out loud at the description/vision.
Don -
When I was a kid for reasons that are beyond me to this day a buddy and I got into a "pepper fight". The only thing I remember is riding home with my mom and hanging my head out of the window the whole time. How did we ever survive??
My old partner makes jalepnos jelly, one time after a big batch, he took all the seeds he had scraped out of them and made jelly with the seeds, it was pretty potent, but tasted good.
My grandmother liked her stuff HOT, so a lot of things she canned, she made two different batches, one hot and the other HOT, just for her and my dad.
One time my grandad and I was going to have a bowl of chile, when a neighboring farmer stopped by. He dished up a bowl ant took one bite, then ask if we had any ketchup he could put in it to kool it down. Grandad told him to help himself, grandma always made her own ketchup and everybody elses ketchup, he got a jar and put a liberal dose in the chile, then howled like a banshee when he took the next bite. He had grabbed the wrong ketchup.
Re hot peppers, anyone inadvertently fry any in oil?
We had to evacuate the small cabin we were in when trying this.
WOW!!
Dont remember why we tried this.

My hands now stink from taking that picture!
Don't eat no jack-in-pulpit bulbs. ;D They are hot like fire. Won't make ya sick from poison, but breath fire. :D :D

We used cane poles back when I was a kid, don't see many around anymore!
The only thing that resembled a cane pole up this way was grandfather's bamboo fishing rod. Rarely was used. They are now $1200 brand new. :o And I have it, almost like new in the case, spare tip, serial numbers on all the pieces. :)
Looks like a very nice time at the 'deer farm'. ;) Glad everything went well and a well spent vacation from the winter doldrums and computer screens. :)
OK I have to ask, and this is for MM to answer not you Jeff ;D, in Jeff's avatar, is he sleeping in the straw house when he should be huntin'? :D
Actually he did lotsa things in the Straw House instead of hunting, but that picture was not taken there.
That just sounded kinda wrong... :D
