Title: RED CLAY HOUND: Welcome to the Forestry Forum!
Post by: Dodgy Loner on August 15, 2012, 04:20:06 PM
Jeff has informed me that my dad (Red Clay Hound) has joined the Forestry Forum. Hopefully he can navigate around the topics well enough to find this one so he can pull up a stump and introduce himself :)

Never took the opportunity to chat much with yourself or your dad at the roast. Well we did talk spruce, but there's got to be something besides trees to talk about. ;D  :D :D

Welcome, Red Clay Hound to the forum. Hope you all enjoyed the pig roast.

Thanks guys.  I've been stalking for a while, but getting to meet some of you at the pig roast convinced me that I need to come out of the shadows.  8)  That and the fact that I just jumped in with both feet and purchased a WM LT40 Super Hydraulic and an EG200 Edger!  I've had an LT15 for awhile mainly to cut wood for myself, Dodgy Loaner and a few friends.  I'm semi-retired now so looking to hopefully start doing some custom sawing with the new toys.  Looking forward to getting some good advice from some of you veterans. :)

So did you finally decide to get your feet wet after standing and contemplating things on that cliff  ??? ;D.

Danny, that cliff was about 200 feet about the water, so couldn't get my feet wet there, but it was a good spot for contemplation!  thecfarm, I actually already have the toys - they were gently used, plan to fire them up this weekend.

Welcome  Red Clay Hound,
As you noticed at the pig roast it is tough to get to talk a lot with everyone.  Once I found you were an E agent, I knew you were a good guy.  Were you involved with the 4-H kids?   You and WDH played in the dirt a lot if I remember right.
Happy sawing.

Well, Dodgy has shown that if he makes a mess in the middle of the floor, he'll clean it up.  Can't ask for much more than that.    :D

Welcome to the forum as a fellow member.  I reckon he probably came across that, natural.   ;)

Fishpharmer, the mill has the 51 hp. Caterpillar engine.  Should have plenty of power to cut through some tough stuff.  The guy who had it was sawing reclaimed heart pine timbers.

Cedarman, I was actually an Extension specialist before I became an administrator.  I am an engineer by training and was the state irrigation and water quality specialist.  I have worked a lot with the 4-H program over the years though.  I was a volunteer shooting sports coach and all my kids were 4-H club members.  I've clipped a lot of lambs and heifers for livestock shows!

I have known WDH most of my life.  We grew up a few miles apart.  His dad used to buy hay from my dad when we were kids, so we spent a few hot Georgia days in the pasture picking up hay bales.  We were also college classmates and friends through college and we've spent some good days together in the wood chasing deer and admiring trees.

Welcome to the forum Red Clay Hound, I truly admire the work you extension folks do, I don't think most people realize how much it is.  I've always wished our extension agent would have taken up teaching instead (he does anyway  ;)), he'd be a great ag teacher.

Now we can add an Ag Engineer to the list.  We need that to balance out the Red Cedar Geologist and the Hippie Accountant  :D.

The world needs balance or it will spin off its axis.

Well I fired up the mill this weekend and cut a few logs.  Had to tune her up a little, but once we got everything set, she ran like a charm. 8)  Here are a couple of photos of the first log.

Red Clay Hound, with the risk of sounding envious,  the shed, tractor and sawmill are impressive.  I have always liked the looks of the yellow Caterpillar diesel on a Woodmizer.  Does the "H" on the radiator screen stand for "Hound?"

Sounds like grits envy to me - common result from eating too many moose mountain oysters. ::)

I think I have identified part of the problem.  Some of our northern citizens have been trying to make grits out of Iowa corn.  That explains a lot, but then last week we caught a Canuckidadian trying to make them out of cobs!  I need to have a long talk with that boy!

Welcome aboard, Mr. Hound!  I have not forgotten your hospitality when I stayed over at your place, when Justin and I carpooled to the piggy roast.  It was nice of you to welcome a stranger like that.  Of course, I was probably stranger than you were expecting! :D :D

Look forward to seeing you at Woodstack 2012. 8)

I got a way with dawgs, WDH.  I rubbed my camera in Alpo just before I got there, and lowered myself to pose with their flag.  I'm a real suck-up when the dawgs are big.

I ain't takin' credit for "Woodstack".  The Okryboy came up with that a while back.
