Title: The next quarter sawing project.
Post by: customsawyer on April 04, 2017, 04:05:40 AM
The next quarter sawing project will be on May 19 and 20. All are welcome to come. For those that haven't been or the others that can't remember how to get here the address is.
1607 Capps Browning rd.
Rentz, Ga. 31075
GeneWengert-WoodDoc  has been very generous and has offered to teach a one day grading course on the 19th for those that are interested. The only cost will be for the literature.  There will be a sawing the log in half with a chainsaw demo. There has been a few requests for this. This demo will come after Gene has finished his class, so it might be later on Fri. or earlier on Saturday depending on how long things take. Then the sawing and eating will take place on Saturday.
Lets keep a head count going so we will know how many to feed. I will be there so I make 1.
If you are planning on bringing something to contribute to the eating please chime in on what you are bringing so others will know and we don't have several of the same thing. Looking forward to seeing everyone that can make it.

Jake, I've been wanting to attend one of your get-togethers for years.  I'll check with the Doc to see if she's going to be home that weekend, and if so I'll plan on attending.

Missed this last year and plan to be there this year.  How far away is the State Park?  That might be a good place to stay for a couple of nights.  We'll think of what to bring and add that later.

About 20 miles to the state park. Most with campers just stay in the yard.

It should go without saying, I'll be there again.  Both days this time, I think.  I'm not sure how many that makes confirmed now.

The skeeters are already getting rough down here. Skeeter net first priority, then sleeping bag.

Robert - that's one fine log.
Thinking though, she's a bit old and sunbleached.
so, I dropped a fresh log for the project.

Being from Canada and all, couldn't figure out what species this bad boy is . ..
But, no bark and straight a s a gun barrel.
Maybe 4x4American or WDH can pinpoint it.
Anyway, maybe a good log for quartersawing?

Yup, Chickin Crispin, but due to distractions, we have not been able to do one for too many years, but we will again.

Pat & I will be attending Andy White's Memorial Service (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php/topic,95573.msg1477752.html#msg1477752) on May 17th.  Attending both events would be a burden especially since they are in opposite directions.  As David said above; "you can't do everything" which is sad but true.

I was also looking forward to meeting the Magicman and Miss Pat.  I just found out today that my mother has to have a pretty serious surgery on May 9, and is expected to be hospitalized for about a week.  If she is doing well and my daddy can handle her care I still plan to attend.

Thanks Dan.  La Quinta had good ratings but their prices were pretty high (best deal that I could find was about 120 a night including taxes - ouch!).  I ended up booking at the Super 8 instead for about 1/2 of the cost (and almost as good of ratings).

I'm looking forward to meeting / seeing everybody there.  Hopefully the weather will cooperate for me to ride down instead of driving.

Alright folks we are getting scheduling nailed down. Friday morning will be the sawing a log in half demonstration. It will start around 10:30 or so trying to give some that are driving in that morning time to get here. There will be a short break in the action for a bite of something and then Gene will begin his grading class at 1:00 pm. The quartersawing will be on Saturday morning starting at 8:30-9:00 in the morning. Depending on how things go the previous day. We will saw until 12:00 or so and then break bread again. Then do some edging and such. Gary and Richard are also wanting to have some time to go over some of the things that have gone on recently with different blades so that will take place either earlier Friday morning or later Saturday. I will leave that up to them.
I have no idea what the count is up to so if anyone has the time to try to figure it out I would appreciate it.

We are planning for THE PROJECT in GA this May about including a Hardwood lumber grading "short class" and exercise on Friday, starting at 1pm.  Interested?  If you come, bring a lumber footage stick if you have one.  I will spend 1-1/2 hour going over the main grade requirements and then we will practice with real pieces of lumber (versus pictures).  There will be some handouts, so it would help if we have an idea of numbers, but even if you do not let us know in advance, we will have a few extras.  It will be a fun time. Likely oak and maybe otHer species.

Of course, the weekend is full of activities of all sort related to sawing, drying, discussions about the way the world turns, etc.

I'd really love to come, but I'm flat out and not sure I'll be able to make it this year.  However, a friend of mine just ordered a lt28 and he and I may carpool down nrxt year if there will be another one.  If anyone is on the fence about going, I'd highly recommend it.  There are so many knowledgable people going and you will learn so much it will be worth the trip even if you have to make some sacrifices to get there.

If any of you who are attending want any of these warehouse lights, let me know.  I will be able to bring a few of them.  They are 270ish volts and do not have bulbs.  Feel free to PM me if you want.  They will not cost you anything.  Also, is there a preferred hotel in Rentz that the attendees are staying at?

them around here. I see them coming in the junkyard often. Everyone

Well I got some bummer news. My wife had a relatively small heart attack yesterday and is in the hospital. She will likely have a heart catheterization tomorrow and remain in hospital until Friday or Saturday, so I won't be able to make it to the project.  I am bummed about both aspects, but we gots our priorities.      DanG, that's great news!
As to the Project?  It was as fantastic as ever, or maybe just a bit better.  Dr. Gene Wengert's class on lumber grading was wonderful.  Thank You, Gene!  The sawing was as good as expected (that quartersawn sycamore had Danny drooling.  Well...  a lot of other people too.) and the chance to catch up with old friends and put faces to some new old friends is always welcome.  The food was as good as anticipated, thanks to Julio and everyone else who contributed to the effort.
I wish I could've stuck around for the class on blades this afternoon, but my time was just getting too short.  I bet it was good as well.  I'd say "thanks", too to Kasco for having a rep there.  That was a really nice touch.
Biggest thanks has to go to Jake for on another one of these, and HITTING IT OUT OF THE PARK AGAIN! 8)

What an awesome gathering.  It was good to see many of the folks who I had the privilege to meet at last year's project and finally get to meet Julio, Mooseherder, Fishfarmer (he was sporting the beard I am going to try to grow one of these days), Deese and others.

The fellowship, sharing of experiences, expertise and different ways of accomplishing the same task (skinning the cat) was very much appreciated.

I would have liked to stick around several more hours but needed to head home.  Rolled into the yard at 11:54 p.m. and realized Poston and Deese either drive faster than I do or do not live as far away from Jake's.

Thank you to Jake for hosting and to all of the folks who took the time to share.

Here is the subject log.

The big sycamore logs come from the river bottomlands of Central and South Georgia.  As you can see, they get quite large.  Jake and Yellowhammer collaborated on the best way to get the most figured boards.  I would say that at least 95% of the boards had good figure.  The Yellowhammer Reverse Roll Quartersawing Technique will maximize the amount of true quartersawn lumber, but you need a big log and Jake Dean (Customersawyer) or Yellowhammer for the best results.  This technique came into being as a function of the Project last year as Yellowhammer left with his thinking cap on after seeing how Jake had perfected the Octagon Method on his LT70, and figured out how to do it on a LT40 with some tweaks that made it even better.

You can do it.  Here is how.

Step 1.  Get a ginormous sycamore log.
Step 2.  Get Customsawyer or Yellowhammer, preferably both.
Step 3.  Get a skidsteer and a big tractor with a grapple.
Step 4.  Get a heavy duty, stout mill like a Woodmizer LT 70.
Step 5.  Get Julio, his wife Pam, Vickie (Slider's wife), and Tammy (Jake's Sweetheart), who will produce a bunch of delicious stuff to eat.
Step 6.  Get a crowd of knowledgeable and hard working Forestry Forum members with experts like Gary from Ohio, Richard from West Virginia, and Dr. Gene from Georgia.

Nothing to it.  A a piece of cake.

See that's where it all falls apart. Judging by what I've read here, "if you feed them, they will come" would take care of steps 2 - 6. A freezer full of crappie and assorted other fish, a loaded grill of beef and pork dissection demos, and that piece of cake are easy. It's that ginormous sycamore that stumps the scheme.

Thank you and everyone else who shared their experiences with us stuck-at-homes!

Wow what a great weekend. As any of you know that have hosted any kind of gathering it takes lots of help to get everything right. Many thanks to all that pitched in and helped. I couldn't have done it without you. Everything from cooking  (yum) to teaching and sharing of knowledge. I couldn't have asked for it to go any better. A project like this is only as good as those that attend, share, and appreciate. From the bottom of my heart, many thanks to all that pitched in and contributed.  smiley_clapping

I would like to thank Jake and all the folks who made this possible.  He had everything planned out, well organized, the food is great, the demonstrations are informative, and the people are as colorful and knowledgeable as they are on the Forum.  Jake has a first class operation, and holds a first class "Sycamore Project!"

Thanks

Wow, what a great event.

For those that could not attend, Jake has an outstanding operation and he really goes all out to ensure that his guests learn a lot and are well fed!

Gene's class was very insightful about hardwood lumber grading.  It still seems like a lot of "smoke and mirrors" to me, but I must admit that a lot of the "smoke cleared" due to Gene's excellent teaching!!

Watching Jake take a chainsaw and precision slice a large red oak in two was a real treat. I marvel at his skill in obtaining results by hand that rivals what most of us achieve with a dedicated slabber...

Jake also did a phenomenal job with Reverse Roll Quartersawing Danny's sycamore log. Having Robert (Yellowhammer) on hand to instruct in his method and supervise made it even better.

Richard and Gary's class on bandsaw blades was a real revelation to me.  Their knowledge is formidable, and I personally learned a great deal from them about blade design and functionality.

Julio's cooking, and the various pot-luck dishes provided by everybody was also a real treat.

Perhaps the best part though was the opportunity to meet so many FF members in person.  I regret that I did not manage to spend more time talking with each and every one of them; but I greatly value the time that others spent with me, sharing either knowledge, their own history and in many instances both.  It is my great fortune to be a part of this community.

Jake, thanks much for hosting this event!  It was truly a joy to attend and extremely valuable in terms of knowledge gained as well.

Scott

It's time for me to say thanks to several people at this project.

First to Jake for his hospitality .Then to GM Mills a (Gary) and Richard (Cutting Edge),for there tireless effort to get me back up and going. They worked for over 2 and a half days on my mill and refuse compensation for all this time they gave to get me back up and going. They told me they came to help not to make money.
What most folks did not know was they came to help Jake ,replace his cat head gasket and install a crank support. He said to get me going first.
Also thanks to Sparks for over nighting parts to us so we could get this job done .
Words can not express how great full i am to be a  part of this fine group of folks.

What a gathering!  I very much appreciate Jake for hosting us and all who were involved in making it work.  It was funny when we would introduce ourselves to each other.  Sort of like finding lost brothers.  As others have said, Dr. Gene's class on grading was great.  I was apprehensive when I noticed the word Test written in chalk on the first board.  Just like reading the Forum I learned a lot.  My wife fell in love with Jake's house and she enjoyed her visit as well.  We had to leave mid-day on Saturday but talked about our visit as we travelled to the Atlanta area.

That comment says volumes about The Project and The Forum.

I had called Jake on Thursday night, just as Julio got there to help him start on the CatHead.
That's commitment to the project folks, he was bound and determined to make it all work.

First, I would like to pass along a genuine Thank You to Jake "customsawyer".  His willingness and desire to open his home and heart to be host for such a gathering, speaks volumes as to his character.  These "Projects" have given attendees a centralized "meeting of the minds" to learn techniques, improve product and production, exchange business/marketing methods, etc.  These events have also provided a venue to be able to learn, contribute and candidly discuss/share information amongst each other (individually or as a group) without inhibition nor anxiety regarding manufacturer, model, secondary support equip., etc. that they may own or are looking to make an investment in.  No matter the costs incurred a person cannot put a price on the wealth we have all gained and relationships established.

As Al "slider" mentioned and many witnessed, his LT70 received extensive repair work being done.  Most that were in attendance did not know that it was literally taking (2) LT70's to keep one operational at times.  While Jake's mill was on crutches (head gasket failure),  hurt_smiley it played the role as an organ donor for Al's LT70 throughout Wed., Thurs., and Fri.  This was needed either to complete/provide upgrades, make repairs or literally troubleshoot defective replacement parts.   >:(  Jake never hesitated when asked and would volunteer whatever was needed either from his personal parts inventory or literally "robbed" off his machine.  If we didn't have it, but could obtain it locally, someone was in a vehicle going to get it.  I will spare the ones reading this any further details but will share a saying that was repeated daily by the ones of us who were intimately involved... "You can't make this s#!t stuff up !!"

A special shout goes out to "sparks" at WM for the phone support and overnighting replacements for defective parts... Twice.  UPS was bringing us parts Thurs., Fri. and Sat. mornings

Another "Thank You" is in order to Jake too.  His willingness to sacrifice parts meant to repair his mill to help a friend expedite the repairs needed on another mill, words have no meaning.  Without those parts, it would have never been accomplished in the narrow time frame we had.  This was a HUGE help to gmmills, myself and of course, slider.  Literally saved days.

Unfortunately, through no fault of our own and the redundancy of waiting on parts,  smiley_lipsrsealed we were unable to get slider's LT70 repaired and sawing before Saturday morning.  The (3) of us (gmmills, slider and myself) were hoping to put Jake's mill back in the shop and remove/repair/re-install the engine but time had run out and not all the parts required were present.  :-\ Jake's crippled LT70 did the sawing on Saturday as the rain moved in.  We all found out during the presentation on blades and related subject matter... the gnats don't like to be wet either and invited their friends into the shop for an all they could eat buffet.  In spite of the gnats, the knowledge shared/gained through a semi formatted and open floor style gathering of sawyers proved invaluable for those in attendance.  To semi-quote an earlier sentence, Jake provided "...a venue to be able to learn, contribute and candidly discuss/share information amongst each other without inhibition nor anxiety regarding manufacturer..."

Fortunately, Sat. evening, the rain subsided and there was a chance to fire up slider's mill.  It was back to making lumber !!   smiley_really_happy thumbs-up

The food cooked by Julio, Vicki (Mrs. slider), YellowHammer and others was nothing short of stellar.   food6

It was great to talk to old friends, customers and meet many new folks as well... when not having tools in hand.

To "slider" - You are more than welcome.  I speak for gmmills and myself when I say this... we would do it again in a heartbeat because you (slider) would do the same for either one of us in the same predicament.  There was NO WAY we were going to stop until your mill was back up and sawing again.  Yes, we skipped a couple meals, unable attend any of the classes, etc. ... it did not matter.  Your mill was down (barely breathing), and at one point, on life support.  To us, your mill became and remained the one and only priority for our trip.  Everything else was secondary... Sorry Jake, you got the hind teat !!

Seeing FF friends I knew was kinda like attending a family reunion.  Meeting FF members I only knew online was a pleasure.  Jake has a way of making everyone feel like a long lost friend.  I know it took a massive effort for him and all those who helped make it such a memorable event.  Hate I missed the hardwood grading course.  I learned a lot at the blade discussion.  I will post the drone videos soon.

Here is the first drone video from the 2017 Sycamore Project!  It took almost 6 hours on my DSL to upload to youtube.  Many more hours of editing. My first real video editing actually.  The raw footage is 4K hi def and I uploaded it at 1080 hi def, the youtube version has lost much of the quality.  I took the liberty of being creative with the limited sound effects I had available. Thank you again to Jake and everyone there!!!  My apologies to those that thought they were getting a haircut, I appreciate everyone's tolerance of the drone.  Also, I apologize if I did not get to meet someone due to my preoccupation with the photography.  It was my loss.  Let me know what you think, and like and subscribe if you will, there's more videos coming...

I like the maneuverability of it but it is hard on the ground.  This particular machine the fuel gauge and some other information come from a digital read out. Well it went out just past the warranty and they wanted $800.00 for a new one. The one thing that I don't like about this machine is that the curl back function on the forks is the weakest of the machines hyd. functions. Well as we all know the further you can tilt the load back the safer it is to carry.

Is part 2 when the drone starts strafing and firing rockets? Will it get head-butted out of the sky by a certain someone? Who stoked the firebox for that steamer sawmill? This is worse than those old Saturday morning serial cliff-hangers. Sky King rides again!

Thank you muchly for taking the time to record, edit and post that!

Thank you for watching part one. :)

Here is the Part Two of the 2017 Sycamore Project...  it is essentially a slide show of people and the quartersawing process.  More or less, its in chronological order, with a possible repeat or two :-[ .  No funny sound effects, so if you don't like my free music choice, just turn your volume down. ;D. Thanks Again...

Thanks! (Haven't seen it yet -- will take from 15 min.s to ages to download before I can watch it. Looking forward to the strafing and hair cutting and combat with sawmills and battles with goats).

Nice slideshow of the quartersawing process.
Maybe it's good to know what blade was used to cut that nice looking lumber...because a mill is only as good as it's blades.

Another nice video.  I took my SLR only to find out I had left the battery in Savannah.  It got covered by some papers while packing to leave.  Also found out that a cracked cell phone lens doesn't mean it won't take good picture and that you need to keep it charged.

GMM,  The blade is designated the Maxx 7.  As Ox stated, contacted Cutting Edge he has the info you will need. He was a vital player in the development of this new blade profile. Also for those of you that were not aware, yes he is a Kasco factory direct sales representatives.
