Thank you all for the information from the previous post!

What are folks thoughts on chains for Alaskan mills?  I saw one video that said use a 10 degree ripping chain and another that said use a full chisel and angle the mill on a 45 degree angle with the tip uphill and let the chain pull the mill through the log. For my first attempt, which chain should I use?

Thank you,

It was my understanding that ripping chain/skip tooth chain was preferred as you could run larger bars on lower HP as you have less teeth in the cut vs reg pro chain.

I just run the chain Granberg sells - it's a 10 degree skip tooth.
Anything someone can design, I can sure figure out how to fix!
If I say it\\\\\\\'s going to take so long, multiply that by at least 3!

For sure, go with ripping chain.
I've used the Granberg, and it is very well engineered.  However, I myself prefer to use the Oregon brand.  I find it easier to purchase locally, and much easier to maintain in the field.

I'm sure you've read all the threads about these...so I'll add two chain tips which have served me well.
-Touch up the chain every two or three cuts, this will pay off ten times over.
-Run extra lubricant, I prefer to use vegetable oil.  It's thinner, cheap, and won't stain the wood or make a mess on the ground.
