Title: MS 361 wrap handle?
Post by: JohnG28 on March 11, 2010, 07:22:55 PM
Anyone know where I can find a wrap handle for an ms361? I have been searching with no luck so far.  Id actually prefer a 3/4 wrap, and I understand this is what Stihl considers a full wrap anyway.  Any direction would be appreciated, thanks.

Should be able to get one from your local stihl dealer. Also Madsens sells an aftermarket handle.

Factory stihl "full" wrap.
1135 790 3600

Factory Stihl "full" wrap kit.
1135 007 1007
includes a 3/4 wrap top handle, a new deep dish side cover, a different top buffer spring, a short scrench, dual large dogs and roller chain catcher.

The best deal is the full wrap kit. The shortie scrench is so you can get the bar nuts off. I have a 3/4 wrap on my 044 and I love it. They also look cool. The large side cover is worth it (the chips fly easier). You can easilly sell the old side cover as that fits a lot of saws, as well as the original top handle/spring. The 361 dual spikes could be larger, IMO. Last I looked, the Stihl kit was $130-160 in the US. You can also get the dual dog and roller kit separately. Here is what they look like on the 361:

Just yesterday in the sawshop I was looking at the new 362. It comes with a full wrap handle, larger spikes and larger side plate for about $50 more than the standard package. Quite a savings over piecing it together later. If anyone's buying a new saw and that's where you're headed anyway it makes sense to check it out.

Ya that package would be huge if I could have got it when bought the saw, but no such luck.  Was the 362 pretty heavy with all the extras on it? I know theyre a little heavier than 361 is.

They are both a little heavier than the  361, and naturally the full wrap would be a little heavier, but the difference between the two packages was little enough for me not to notice. However,  I wasn't planning to buy one, I just was looking around while he found me a handful of parts :), and thought it would be good to pass on.

That is real common here in the west. In Oregon many pro saws bigger than a 260 come in the 3/4 wrapped R version.

Note also that if you buy the aftermarket upgrade, you can sell the side cover and top handle to lower the costs.

Wrap handles are definitely the way to go on a falling saw. Seems less popular in some areas though. I always noticed the bars offered were on the longer side out here as well, just what most people are looking for in their different parts of the country I guess.

Some Stihl saws that are the factory R version also have higher capacity oilers. Rocky J knows more about that. So, if you're ordering a new saw, you might want to get the factory R, as opposed to adding the wrap handle.
