Title: pushing cart on track
Post by: farmfromkansas on February 28, 2019, 07:44:41 PM
Filled up my container with boards, and was trying to push the cart with my UTV, Do you guys build something to push with the bumper?  Could not figure out how without damaging the Utv, so shoved it in with the fork on my skidsteer. Not real smooth.  Pulling it out was fine, just a small chain and UTV.

Do you have a ball hitch on the back?  Front?  If just the back, I'd make a bar that is slung under your UTV with a C on the end so that a ball hitch can hook to your UTV.  Then use a rope to hold it up a little off the ground and push your load in the container.  If you had a receiver on the front of your UTV it would be a lot simpler.

Another option would be to mount a snatch block in the back of your container.  Run a cable from the back of the cart to the snatch and back out to your UTV.  Then just pull.  Coil up the cable and place in the container.

What kind of UTV? What kind of cart? What does it have for a bumper? I have a 3010 Mule and it has a push bar, but since I pushed an F250 the other night I realized I should make some sort of cushion for the front. Probably some vertical 4x4 scraps off the mill, either held on with U-blots to the push bar, or some relieved backstraps to clamp over the bar. That would spread the load.

I pull my carts out with the tractor, rope from fork to cart in reverse gear, and push it back in same way it came out, forks vertical, on the back edge of the cart.  I like the tractor because its slow and steady.  I unload the carts with the forklift, so the tractor never moves or looses position.

Have a '13 Kawasaki Teryx, has a ball on the rear, and kind of a pipe bumper on front.  Copied YH's carts, 4" channel. Looks like I need to add a hitch onto the cart, and make a bar to connect to the Teryx.Have 2 20' carts and a 5' so it leaves a little gap on both ends in the 48' box.

It could be as simple as a hole in a plate and have a forked end on your bar and drop a hitch pin through all.

The push vehicle tow hitch needs to be able to extend and bridge the gap from track into the door so the door can be closed.  An extended hitch would work, but that's why I like forks, I can just nudge the carts inside with the 4 foot forks.  But anything with a little extended reach would work.  I have 4 packs on 2 carts, with 3,000 lbs topweight weight and about the same of wood, so 24,000 lbs total mass going in or coming out at the same time.  With a good level track, it's surprisingly easy and smooth.

I've pulled my carts out owith the Polaris UTV, the Honda ATV or the forklift, and a tow strap when it's convenient.  Just about anything works.

Remember that you also have to have some technique for stopping.

For stopping, I welded a piece of steel in the middle of the track so the end wheel runs into it on both ends.  Did not want to worry about how to stop the cart.

I used the tail light on my Polaris once.  It was very effective at stopping the kiln carts, but wasn't optimal or even reusable.

Do any of you guys have pictures of your track set up? I bought some hard plastic wheels 2" wide and 8" tall with a cast iron center at a auction. Hope to use the with a channel. Thanks
