   I plan to keep one that size to saw as a test log the next time the WM service loop team comes to service my mill. No more of these 12" green 8' long tulip poplar logs. From now on it's gonna be real world test logs!

I sawed a kinda small Cherrybark Red Oak job today.
Fourteen  8' & 10' logs but I culled three of them because they would not have made quality lumber.  It's tougher to make good production with these shorter logs. 

We had finished sawing @2:30 so not a bad partial day of sawing.  1318 bf of 1X6, 1X8, 1X10, & 1X12's.

Right clic over a phrase (highlighting the part you want) or image and clic "copy" in the drop down.  then put the cursor in the area you want to put it, right clic and select "paste".  it will place a copy there.  this includes the picture url.  If you want to move something, clic "cut" in the drop down and it will remove from the original spot and place it in the new spot by right clic and select "paste".

Logs large enough to produce defect free lumber like that deserve the "el primo" moniker.

Not worth posting a picture but I sawed up another hemlock log today that I didn't have much hope of getting good lumber from. Maybe just a fluke but this hemlock seems to saw some really nice lumber and doesn't have any tension at all. To bad it is the only one I had on the property. Also found a fellow to sharpen my old bands at $7.00 each. I took him 21 and he said 2 were not fit to sharpen. He had a Cooks sharpener and seemed to know what he was doing so hopefully they will cut good. I was getting ready to cut them up and trash them but kept putting it off. Now I have about 40 bands so that should keep me cutting for quite awhile.

  I was clearing a path up the main draw that runs through my property last week so I can haul some roof repair tools and items up to my shooting house up there. I knew there were several fallen trees across the trail so I took my chainsaw and cut sever out of the way and dragged them down the hill for firewood. One was buckeye, another was poplar but I cut one I was pretty sure was elm. It was uprooted at the stump and the bulk of the log was off the ground so the log was very sound. I cut several lengths off and dragged them to my firewood shed. The butt log was a little over 10' long, 10" SED with just a little sweep. The grain and wood color was so pretty I decided to saw it into LE slabs to make benches. I sawed 3 9/4 slabs but then resawed one of them into square stock to use for legs. I plan to make about 6 benches in the 3' range. Looking back I should have just kept all 3 slabs intact and sawed some short square stock for the legs out of one of the other firewood logs. I may still saw another 5' or so of the next log for some more legs to be sure I have plenty. It is real pretty wood and I think it will make nice benches. I ended up with about 53 bf of lumber from the log. Better than firewood.

   The wood reminds me a lot of chestnut beams I have resawed as far as color and grain pattern.

An uprooted Elm is not something that I normally find.  Look at the end grain.  Elm's wavy pattern is unmistakable.

I looked at 14 Oak logs this morning that I should begin sawing Monday morning.

Well, if the sawmill destroys the legs in the process, they can still go in the stove.      .  Just pokin the bear.  maybe i can demo my way this year.  will you be at the sawing project Howard?

  It is still iffy whether we will get to come or not. I'd like to but it will depend on my wife's health (and mood) and such as to whether we try to come again. I sure enjoyed it last year.

    If we do come after the workshop we'll go to Lake City Fla (again) for a day or so and visit with my last surviving aunt (98 y/o Paternal) then go to Escambia County Fla just below the Ala line and be there for Mom's 94th birthday on the 28th. I don't know if we can afford or survive that much time on the road and away from home.

    Maybe I'll win the lottery between now and then. Anybody want to send me a winning ticket?

  There is a little spalting for a foot or so around the very butt cut. I wondered at one point if it might be an old Sycamore but it was growing on the hillside and all the sycamore I've sawed was a real ight and often greeniish tint but of course they were fresh cut. It looks like the elm I have sawed in the past.

I was not really questioning, but Elm is deep rooted and unless there is some kinda root rot, it does not easily give up it's perch.  I don't remember ever seeing an Elm blow down here.  The end grain will easily tell the species.

I cut some standing dead elm after 5 years but had to push it over with the track loader.  made good firewood.  pre sawmill.
