I was walking at the edge of a swamp in central Florida (Rock Springs Run Reserve). There were many trees blown down by last summers hurricane including this one.  This was a medium sized tree with alternate entire leaves about 3 inches long.  The distinctive seed pod is 3/4" wide. The seed pod should be the key, but I looked in all of my books and could not ID this tree.  Any ideas?

Looks like Star Anise or Yellow Anise (Illicium paviflorum)
Very rare in the wild and more like a large shrub than a small tree.
Fairly common in the native plant nursery inventory.
