Beech and maple are dry in one season in my experience. The maple I cut last July is bone dry and full of checked splits. However the beech is still green, I cut that in October. I'll will be burning that next winter.  ffsmiley That maple gets mighty hot in the stove out in the shop. I only burn one stove full a day. It was about 60° out there yesterday morning and 20° outside. A load soon gets the shop to 85°. But so doesn't ash, fir or aspen. :D

I find no reason to season hickory or beech a 2nd year. Cut it this winter burn it next, oak too. No problems.

Oak will burn, if that is the only objective.
But split and three years of seasoning, it will burn and in addition to burning will provide much more heat. Usually the btu's are of more interest when going to the trouble of cutting, splitting, and burning wood.
Ash, like hickory, provides good heat with one to two years seasoning after splitting.

oak makes better coals for the next morning fire or after a day at work.  Elm makes the same BTUs, but not the coals.

Red Oak has a lot of water weight, once dried to 12%, it is not really any heavier or denser than maple or beech. Green weight it is a lot heavier by the cu foot.

I already have enough wood in my big shed for next year and it's all white oak. It seems to take a couple years to get really good and dry. The beech ,I agree with Cutter ,in my opinion will be plenty dry next winter. I split my wood in pretty big  pieces so I figured the hickory might need a couple years. I shut the air off on the stove when I go to bed and can get 8 hours burn time pretty easy and if it's not real cold more than that. I haven't burned a whole lot of hickory over the years. I mostly leave them for the squirrels but these were close to the garage and had to come down.

Did not start the chainsaw today.
Maybe when I get out of work tomorrow.
I just picked up some wood that I cut last week.
Was kinda odd that I had to hit it will the bucket because it was froze to the ground.
Have not had any temps above freezing for almost 2 months.

thecfarm, why, that just, sucks.  My sympathies.  Here in NW Pa we got highs in the fifties and better all week. I admit early for that, but Ill take it.

Got another beech tree on the ground. My son was up yesterday and helped me. It was nice to have someone who could throw to get a line up in the tree. Put a snatch block up the hill and he ran the tractor while I cut. Didn't go exactly where I wanted it but close enough. Trying to get this area cut before the leaves come out. This one had two prongs so I tied them together. I'm a little leery cutting two prong trees but it needed to come out and I will make good use of it in the stove.

Pretty good size tree. Will take me awhile to get it worked up.

Picking up rounds with my Cub Cadet. To get to this wood I had to go across a field that had an area that was soft. I didn't want to take the tractor thru it so used the Cub Cadet. It didn't sink in at all.

I found two ticks on my pants leg, so here we go with that.

  Keep on cutting.....Cutter

I find the SxS is low impact on wet places to, if you want it to be. Some people will use them or 4-wheelers to tear up wet places. A pickup will cut maybe 4" in and the buggy just shows a track print.

Those dang deer ticks start as soon as there's a bare patch of ground👎

Bill, good firewood that beech.
In WV. the land seems to be all up and down. I'm surprised the trees don't grow sideways. :uhoh: ffcheesy

Cutter, Don't have a lot of flat land around here and on really steep areas like where I'm cutting now it's hard to cut safely. Sometimes have to dig out a place to stand while cutting and it makes it hard to get away when tree starts to fall. I believe it would be easier if the trees did grow sideways. Most of the hills have benches that run around the side of the hill and with a small tractor I can get around them pretty good but along these little creek beds it's extremely steep. I've already had to dig one of those little deer ticks off of me. Hard to see them being they are so little but they itch like the dickens so I was able to find it. Kind of worried about getting that Lyme disease but I fellow can't stay holed up in the house.

Ground was dried out pretty good today so I decided to get my logs out. Used a pig pole and a set of tongs . I've got pretty good with that setup so that a lot of the time I can hook and unhook without getting off the tractor. Looking forward to blocking them up. Wanting to give my new saw a good workout .

Use these same tongs on my log arch also. They have moved a lot of wood

Not aspen, the wood doesn't turn orange brown, stays white.

Got my logs blocked up today. Cut them around 22" long. Really enjoyed running my new saw. A lot easier to handle than the 372 and cuts really fast which I think has a lot to do with the smaller chain. I filled it up before I started and cut it all without running out of gas. Should get well over a cord once I get it split up.

Nice bunch of wood, glad the saw worked out. If you can get nice beech that isn't half rotten it makes great firewood.  ffsmiley

What kind of chain did they give you on that saw Bill? If you weren't using an X-Cut before, and that should be what they put on it, then that in itself will show you a difference in how it cuts. Those are good chains, until you rock them anyway.
