Be careful out there, you're still mighty tender :).
We were down to the last potful last week when our 20lb order came in, that was too close for comfort! We had stretched the previous pot with some swill but I was not looking forward to being quarantined with that rot gut, we're good for a little while now.

I have to laugh as my departed wife lived hand to mouth  for decades before I came along .Then old habits are hard to break .If coffee were on sale she would stock up.like 6 at a time,Maxwell House .After she passed I didn't buy coffee for several years.
My partner likes Folgers but just like Dar could not afford to buy in mass .She can now and there usually is couple of cans on stand by .Dang things come in plastic. How are you supposed to use that to boil eggs in ?

PoginyHill

Despite my time drinking lots of horrible coffee in the Navy, I've come to appreciate good, fresh coffee - and LOTS of it. Probably 4-6 cups/day. I prefer to buy beans and grind and day or two's worth at a time. Keep grinds in an air-tight container and the beans in the freezer. Funny thing is, I only enjoy coffee while relaxing or at a desk. I don't bring it to the woods with me - only water-diluted juice.

I've got about a dozen 1 kg (2.2 lbs) cans on stand by of my favorite roast. I get it for half price on sales. :D I drink coffee in the morning and never touch it until the next morning.

Being an old sub sailor I  drink it constantly, hot or cold but prefer the former .In the evening for example around 9 PM I might have a Budweiser, cup of Joe and shooter of 80 proof Canadian all at the same time .It doesn't keep me awake .
However on a trip I don't touch it because it's a diuretic with the obvious effect .

A combination of the sailor talk and Al wanting to boil some eggs brought back a memory. Down in the engine room of an old "tin can" destroyer patrolling the coast of Nam on occasions on the mid-watch (midnight to 4AM) we would pirate a half dozen eggs and put them in the big percolator coffee pot and they would cook while the coffee perked.

I have heard of putting egg shells in a pot of coffee to settle the grounds but that's taking it to a whole new level.

On the egg thing you could probably boil an egg between the main turbines of a nuke sub or a tin can for that matter .
That navy coffee came in a great big tin thing .Must have had 20 pounds of coffee .Good trading stock .I was pretty good as a comshaw artist .
One of my commanding officers once told me he believed with enough coffee he thought I could get a nuke sub built .My reply was perhaps not but I could get a destroyer escort perhaps . 8)

I drink one pot (8oz) of Cafe' Bustelo espresso spiked with two tsp of raw cane sugar on the way to work. Used to drink it all day long but I got out of the habit about 5 years ago for some reason .

A splash of cold water in the pot is all you need to settle the grounds in a pot without a basket .

Up here, boiling the kettle for coffee over the fire consisted of filling an old quart coffee can that had a wire handle and placed on a Coleman stove or flame fire with a stick shoved into the ground to hold it. Boil, let grounds settle, pour easily. ;D

We have about 5 different kinds of coffee in the house at the moment.  A couple fresh roasted bags, one locally and one based out of New York somewhere, as well as some Maxwell House and some Folgers quick bags.

Most days I weigh out my coffee, grind it with a hand grinder, and run through my aeropress at 201degrees for 2:30minutes.  Top the cup off with hot water and drink black.  Come out so smooth you don't need anything else in it.

Some days I weigh, grind, and use my coffee maker carafe, and the cone filter basket to do a manual pour over coffee at either 201 or 177.. depending on my mood.

Other days when I'm feeling lazy, Maxwell House treats me right... Made in the coffee maker.  Bodum from Target.

Old Greenhorn

Wow, that is a LOT of work. I hope you enjoy it. That's too much more me. We set up a 12 cup perk pot before we to to bed, put it on a timer. It goes off at 4:45 am and is ready when we get up. No coffee, no workie.
I am hoping to add a pot out in the shop so I have go juice through the day.

@Old Greenhorn  Oh man its totally worth it.   There is a massive difference in the taste between preground packaged coffee and fresh roasted beans.  Also the water temp & brew time plays a huge part in what chemicals IE flavors are drawn out and left behind.   I've had so many people that come over and have coffee say wow, that is really smooth.  Or that theyve never tasted black coffee like that or even previously liked black coffee.

Of course here is a recipe per see of what I sometimes make and its mouth watering..

I grind beans for a full large cup of coffee but then I brew it with only 1/3rd or less of the water.  So I get a Faux espresso-ish type concetrate.  Then I use "Coffeemate" brand french vanilla and heat it up to boiling.  This is very important as it changes into this amazingly marshmallow flavor.  Then I whisk the hell out of it to make it really foamy and increase in volume by 2-3times.  Pour than into the coffee and its virtually heaven in a mug..  absolutely amazing.

Also one of my favorite ways to make coffee is cold brewing.   1:1 Cups/oz of water to ground coffee (can really use any kind for this) 8cups of water and 8 ounces of ground coffee.  I use a large pickle jar with a lid.  Mix and set in the fridge for 12-24hrs.  I do an initial strain with a mesh sieve and then filter through coffee filters.  Youre left with a concentrate that taste incredible in 1:4 coffee to water up to 1:2 ratios.  Add a little whipping cream and vanilla- wowza.   Cold brew is very different than hot brewing.  You get a distinct flavor that you never have had in a hot brewed coffee, even if the coffee was then chilled.

I know it all sounds like a lot, but I encourage anyone who is interested in a new coffee experience to give these a shot and feel free to contact me if you need advise or assistance!!

Ps:  I generally weigh out 12-18 grams of beans for an 8oz cup of water.  I prefer strictly 201degree water for 12-15grams coffee, and 177 for 18grams of coffee for that 8oz of water.  Those water temps were founded by my own pallet to what I specifically liked.

Magicman

OK, I did it.  I am a one cup a day coffee drinker so I use a single cup maker.

I liked this coffee maker that I showed back in Reply #210, but there was a problem.  It uses a mesh brew basket rather then a paper filter and I would occasionally spatter coffee grounds inside (and outside) of PatD's kitchen cabinet.  If/when I saw it, I would clean it up but.....

So what was the remedy?  I have avoided the K-Cup maker because of the extra expense but more especially the size.  Since I am allotted a limited amount of space, it had to be small.

So enter the K-Mini-Plus.  It's only 4½" wide, 11½" deep, and 12" high.

And it will allow my travel mug to fit under the spout.  I did some Google searching and had it delivered for under $75.  It came yesterday and I am sipping my first cup as I type.  :)

So now my coffee expense will increase from $15 per month to $30. food6

I did a bit of unofficial testing/timing.  Using a Tervis cup, which is plastic and double insulated, the last sip after 15 minutes was cold.  Using the Yeti cup, the last sip after 45 minutes was still hot.
Been using a Thermos travel mug. It never cooled off after an hour. I started using it without the cover because it was too hot on the lips. Can only take so much burnt lip. :D

Still like the fine china for flavour, hands down.

I picked up a case of surplus coffee cups from the navy at some sale somewhere when I was in my 20's. No coffee ever tasted better than from those cups. They were mugs really used in the general galley mess I think. They were tough too, but didn't hold up well when dropped on concrete. They were marked 'china' on the bottom with the USN logo. I may have one left and if I do, it remains protected.

We got whatever $10 electric coffee make and a big tub of mccafe i think right now.  I put in so much cream and splenda it dont matter.  Wife takes it piping hot but i honestly prefer the next days leftovers out of the fridge.    I dont like hot liquids that arent soup very much.

In the winter while truckin id find my spot late at night, go in get a coffee and set it on the hood overnight.  Wake up in the mornin, push the starter button, build air, get my drawers on and drink my breakfast.
