Filled my wood rack on the back porch yesterday after work, which is 1/2 cord and typically lasts about 2 weeks, so that should get me most of the way through Feb. That puts me at about 3 cords burned this season, but the 1st cord was a lot of junk I was wanting to get rid of before I needed to rely on round the clock fires.

I will have plenty of wood for the rest of this year and have wood cut, split, stacked and under cover for the next two winters. I like being ahead...

Magicman

I am wondering whether I will need to bring up more wood??  We will have a few days in the low 20° next week.  My intentions are to saw but PatD will still need a flicker.  fire_smiley

This shed was completely full a month ago. A little more than a cord of red oak. Put the last of it on the back porch yesterday. Supposed to be pretty cold here next week also. I've burnt three full cords so far this year. Got four cords in another shed for next year but don't really want to get into it but I will probably have to.

A few mild winters can throw a man's preparedness off kilter.  :wink_2:

Moon is out tonight, 14° with RH of 50% and 3 day snow storm pending, well I think the brunt of it will be Sunday night into Monday followed by squally days most of the week. If it stays that dry and cold, I don't expect a block buster storm.   Looks like lots of wind along with it.

Looking this morning and I'm almost up to 3 cords burnt.

Started to snow a few minutes ago but it is suppose to turn to ice pellets then freezing rain then rain with lots of wind.

Just wait it's on the way.  At 7:30 this AM we had gotten 4.5 inches per my yardstick and it has intensified since then.
They are still predicting 8 to 12" in this area.

It was around 20* all day and snowing. I swear I burned 3 times the wood I would have if the sun were out. Once into February the sun really helps. There was a lull in the snow about noon and I went out to  plow. There was 7". As I was cleaning off the truck it started to rain, still 20*. Banks are already high. Made two passes each way down the road. Got some over and the rest stacked against the banks, I'll have just enough room tomorrow to get through with the 4" to 5" more inches from this afternoon and tonight. Rain was over quick and snowing hard again now.

I have come to the conclusion that wood sheds are a lot like the fuel gauge in my truck. You fill it up drive a whole bunch and the gauge barely moves.  THEN, you get to the halfway point and it RACES to empty!

Nearest I can tell we got about 10" of snow from this storm and it was followed by wind.  According to the forcast 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 50 mph.
For the state that is what I call a $5,000,000 storm,  $5,000,000 the state will spend clearing off the roads and $5,000,000 the ski areas will pick from skiers.

I got home to find the power out. First get stove CRANKING. Next, drag genset through snow, fire up. Run cord, switch breakers, hook up cord, switch breakers to GEN. Wait 28seconds for line power to come back on.  I knew when the half of my basement not hooked up to the GenTran had power that I was gonna get to flip more switches.

That's about what we got on this side of the state too. I saw this Friday night. We are right about where the "+" sign is. Spent a good part of Saturday getting ready for a ton of snow.

I plowed 7" Sunday during a lull and then plowed 3" or 4" more this morning. Not complaining we already have plenty. High winds started later this am and it is really moving around.

Maybe 5 inches of snow on the ground .Temps drop back to single digits at night gets maybe mid 20's daylight . Goes through the wood which is mostly EAB killed ash and popcorn dry .Burns hot but not as long . Burns about a face cord a week and at most one more month to burn I'll be in fine shape . If not I've got 7.5 acres of woods and 40 chainsaws .

SwampDonkey

2 cords of dry stuff left here under the porch. Warmer days now, been burning no wood at all during daylight. Been 80° with the sun and windows. The dirt road about 8 mils from here we often drive through in winter was muck and ruts yesterday. Checked the thermometer when we got home, was 32°. Weather app said 25°, but snow doesn't make mud at 25° unless that is new science.  ffcheesy ffcheesy

Filled up my half cord porch wood rack again yesterday while everything was frozen hard as we have a warm up with some rain forecast in a couple of days.

This time of year I try to take advantage of cold days or fill the rack early in the morning before the sun warms things up. I like to use the tractor to move wood - takes 3 full buckets for my 1/2 cord rack - but it can make a mess in mud season.

Magicman

Reckon I'm gonna make it or not?  The forecast says 37° Thursday morning and 38° next Monday morning.  Both days will warm up into the 60's, so it will be a couple of logs and let er die.

Unless someone blows some Glaciated Stuff down here, it could be interesting.  That being said, I have seen some bad stuff in March & even April, so we shall see.  :wacky:

Thinking about the possibility of you getting cold MagicMan made me wonder what you do with all the slabs and what-not that come off of your saw mill ?? I don't remember seeing any on your porch rack. Maybe I missed it.

gg

Magicman

I seldom saw for myself and have slabs, but when I do, I buck and split them.  Some remaining splits are what is next to the house/brick in the above picture.

In my initial firewood picture, again the slab splits are on the far end next to the brick.  I also see that the largest stick seen here in the bottom right still survives.  All of the remaining sticks got slid over Saturday.
