It's pretty obvious there are alot of folks that are a wee bit faster than me. Some of da posts that show up on the forum would take me days to type.   :-[

The early results sure make me feel better.   ;D 

I really appreciate the members that are not accomplished typist on their input.  I can't imagine how long it must take them to type their posts, but they do.  I thank you 'hunt and pokers' for sharing your knowledge with us, one peck at a time :)

Good survey, I like this one.  I'm really curios of who's typing out there.

I'm a touch typist but not a very good one.  Half a year in high school.  I can still hear Miss Hunt saying "Fingers on the home row!"

Too bad you didn't take high school typing from Mrs. Holloway, Chet.  She woulda straightened out your Yooper self.  These keyboards are a piece-o-cake compared to the old upright Underwoods we had to pound out 35wpm on. :o  What I really like about typing on the computer, is the instant correction. I proofread as I go, and it would ruin my day to have to start over just because of a double strike or misspelling.  I took Mrs H's class in 1961, and I can still type without looking at the keyboard.

I chose  Too fast for thought process.

But actually the truth is, I can type much faster than i can spell.  Most times after I post I realize this and go back and correct the worstest of the spelling.  Some of the spelling I don't change cause in spite of what the spell checker says, that's the way I thunk it!

Hey DanG, I learned on one a them manual Underwood's too! Liked em much better than the old Royals.  47 words per minute in Mrs. Rowans Class.  (She was really cute for a teacher) :)

I took typing class in high school, back when computers were novelties run by puch cards. I took the class not knowing the skill would one day be usefull, but rather, I was the only male in an all female class (they were considered "future secretaries" back in '75).
Even with those odds, I didn't fare too well (late bloomer) but at least I can type! :D

BTW, I can type faster than my thought process, but that doesn't mean I'm a fast typist.  ::)

The first sentence Mrs. Rowan had us type, "I had a jade sale at the lake".  She musta made us type it a hundred million times.  The grades in the class were pro rated and lots a folks didn't like that i could type so fast, until I started typing a couple of em's timed test and would slip it too em so's they could pass.  I had done had all mine in and didn't have to keep taking the test but I'd type along anyways. Actually one guy that was a senior tole me that if I didn't he'd break my arm.  Considering that we was sorta friends and he was semi kidding, or not,  I helped him out.  Now Mrs. Rowan weren't no fool and pretty sure she knew what was going on.  She KNEW that guy weren't gonna get no kind of job where he'd be typing and probably wanted him to pass so's he wouldn't take her class again.  So I figured by helping him I was helping her out too. Still don't feel bad about it.

I'm with Brad.  It was either Home Ec or Typing and I could already make PB&J.  :D :D :D

  I'm a two finger typing adict... as long as the two fingers dont hit the letters too quickly I'm doing OK ... the only two keys I know where there at with out looking are the backspace and deleat .,..
 

I just typed out "I had a jade sale at the lake" a bunch of times, just for kicks.  That's sort of like a tongue twister for your fingers!  Made me realize that I'm just as much right handed at typing as I am in everything else.   ::)  I had a great typing teacher, and all of us turned it into a competition back then.  I was usually one of the quickest, but my accuracy suffered, which still is the case today.  It's very often two steps forward, one step back.   ::)

Never did take any typing classes, taught myself. ;)

My high school typing teacher was a Mrs. Cordell.  I hated typing back then (1961) because that was supposed to be for girls!  Well, I ended up in a job where I used the computer a lot and also had to write program specifications.....my typing skills came in real handy and even improved.  In 1986 I wrote Mrs. Cordell a letter of appreciation and thanked her. It was none to soon either because about 4 years later she had Alzheimer real bad.

Wow, is this bringing back memories.....35WPM.....only 2 errors.  I had a male typing teacher.  He didn't like me.  I shined in his class though and when I graduated, my final timed test was 99 WMP with one error.  That was on an IBM Selectric with the amazing little ball rotating.   :D  The teacher, Mr. Baker, told me that I'd never amount to anything in business because of my attitutude.  I was not shy and I have never had a problem expressing myself.  The best part was when I went to the 20 year class reunion and Mr. Baker was there greeting us as we arrived.  He stuck his hand out and said, "Well, Roxie, what are you doing with yourself?"  I smiled and said, "I'm the Chief Financial Officier of a 10 million dollar manufacturing firm."  I've got to tell you, that felt really good.   :D  If I had a "proper business attitude" which in 1970 meant secretary making coffee, I never would have made it.   ;D  By the way, I excelled at shorthand too!  A completely lost art now! 

I can use 2 fingers but I still hunt and peck a lot.Im also a self taught typer.My new job requires a lot of computer work so Im getting better.I thank God everyday for spell checker!

  Sometimes, both fingers hurt real bad when I get done, ESPECIALLY when the whole DanG post disappears when ya hit the SEND button.  >:( >:( :D :D

  Never use Spell Checker. If I could make a livin Spellin, I would be a gazillionaire.  Don't allow fer misteaks thoo.  ;) :D :D :D :D

Do you count backspace in that 35wpm.

I can get all of the fingers going, but if I think to much about the act of typing I have to look at the KB.

Ahhh yes typing class....one boy and twenty girls, what's not to like about those odds.  ;D   Miss Dirks hated me because she thought I was just there to scope out the girls (she was homlier than heck) and did everything she could to get me to drop the class. I even got up to 60wpm if I was using the new IBM electrics. The drill I remember as we were learning was her standing up there saying aaa bbb ccc lll. Now I'm lucky to average 20wpm. :D

I just don't understand this poll. :( I only use my mouse to copy and paste words. It is slow looking for the right words in other posts,  but it helps in the spelling problem. 8)    I only need the left click on the mouse, so I guess I am a one finger writer.

Like a lot of you guys I took a typing class in high school.  I needed an easy elective and I figured there would be a lot of chicks in there.  Turns out it was one of the two most valuable classes I had in high school (and maybe college).  The other was geometry.  My crappy day job keeps me staring at a computer and keeps my typing skills up.  Touch typer.  It annoys my wife when I'm at home looking at her while she tells me something and I'm still typing on something else.

Most of my posts look like Charlie's because I can't type and look at the screen.  Keep hitting cap lock instead of A:D Boys were not allowed in typing class and would not have dared anyway

That's kinda what I was told by our student adviser in high school. He figured typing was what secretaries were for. Dat ole boy got his butt fired about a year after I graduated.   ;D

You notice all my posts are short. ;D Had  a choice in grade 9, could take typing or auto shop, being shy I took shop ::) If I try and use two fingers it takes twice as long to fix all the mistakes. :D This forum is a great help to my limited literarey skills. I guess Charlie and i were lucky in a sense.  We didn't have any girls in our school and typing class was encouraged.  Touch Typing has been one of the most useful skills I learned in school.  I'd have never thought that it would be.  Mrs. Cordell, the Coach's wife, taught typing and book-keeping.  She was one beautiful lady.  It made it a lot easier to sit in a class doing repetitions on the keyboard when she was sitting at the front of the class.   She would walk the aisles too, not to reprimand but to help.  You could tell she was there even if she walked up behind you 'cause she smelled good.  Just as nice a lady as one would ever want to meet.  She developed Alzheimer's in her later years and is gone now.   I think of her on occasion when I am having trouble finding a key.  I always had trouble with the numbers and special characters on the top row.

Touch Typing is a tool that is really not that difficult to learn  There are drills that can be found on the INTERNET that will show finger placement.  Once that is done, it is just practice, practice practice.  You have to teach your fingers where the letters are located.  Just like riding a bicycle, you never forget totally.  A little time on the keyboard and it comes right back to you.

As popular as the QWERTY keyboard has become and as dependent as most jobs are on folks knowing how to type, everyone should make an effort to learn touch typing.  

I recall a favorite saying of my Grandmother, "can't never could".

Oh yes!  QWERTY.   That is the name of the keyboard because it is  the characters just above the line that you rest your fingers upon.

Your left index finger rests on "f" and your right index finger rests on "j".  From there you can find the rest of the keys.  You should be able to look down and see the "g" and "h" between your hands.

It's actually fun and self-challenging. :)

just a little history lesson ....QWERTY keyboard configuration was created to keep vowels from jamming the keys on the old manual typewriters....fact is sometime stranger than fiction :D :D :D

I spend LOTS of time writing letters, reports, evaluations etc. and every day I thank my Dad for my typing ability.  I was amazed as a kid watching him type on an old manual Underwood.  He was a Teacher and Farmer.  He told me that when you get older you will be gald you learned how to type so make sure you take any typing class you can.  I took two semesters of typing in High School and the rest is history.  I dont look at the keyboard and for some reason it just comes natural. 

My two fingered typing has gotten so good, there is often smoke signals coming from the keyboard  8)

I'm having some weird problems with the test.  I took it three times.  All three times I ended up with about 335 CPM, but it showed my accuracy at around 39%.  The weird part is that I didn't see any differences between what I typed and what the paragraph had.  Two of the three times I did make about 3 errors, but corrected them as I made them.  The third time I made no errors as far as I could tell.  Strange but true.

Remember, spaces, caps, punctuation, all have to be correct. Could be a browser problem too. Not sure if it works for anything other then I.E.

My posts reflect my typing skills, very few posts consisting of short choppy sentences . The only time I use two fingers is when my left hand index finger is on the shift key and the right index finger ( MY TYPING FINGER ) hit another key.
I usually lose my train of though while looking for the right key to punch :(

I'm speedy...but not so accurate!   ::)  I can still hear Mrs. Peterson telling me, "Dan, it's not a race!  You need to SLOW DOWN and become more accurate." 

I think now though, I'm pretty stinking quick with the backspace key and fix things on the fly...my overall accuracy after reading the test was pretty accurate, but there was a lot of backspacing goin on.

I'm with Corley5, those are about my numbers too. Actually I can still type with my hands on the keyboard as taught in typing class but rarely do. Oh, by the way, I married the best typest in the class and we will celibrate (? sp.) 38 years in Oct. and it keeps getting better!! ;D

Much eisier to type with the words coming from  the brain than a paper or screan.  I took typing in HS went from 15 wpm to 30 in one year! I had to use the old manual type writer. Used to do the touch type in school .but hadn't typed for 30 years . I now can type with two fingers and some times as many as four.  It is surpriseing that I remember where the letters are at times.

I keep hearing everyone praising their typing teacher. :) Well, I had the worst typing teacher in the country. :( He didn't know the first thing about teaching  >:(. He couldn't even type himself. ::) It is a wonder I can even type at all! :o

Had two years of it in high school - 9th and 10th grades - back in the early 1960's.  Got pretty decent at it then, even on the old manual Royal typewriters.  I think there might have been a few of the Underwoods in there the 1st year.  Used the skills learned a great deal through college and then in my chosen profession, prior to retirement. 

Not nearly as proficient at it now!  Fingers must be a little larger (or the keys are a little closer together  ;D.)  And is seems that arthritis, bursitis, and the other 'itis boys sure have a way of slowing the finger movement. :D

I am not about to pick on anyone here for the hunt and peck. I started out that way, and worked my way into it gradually. I still watch the keyboard while I type, but don't need to.

I found that forums like this one,a nd active chat rooms make your typing skills grow quickly. it is hard to keep up in a conversation if you don't learn to type faster. It all comes in time like anything else. I am sure I will not learn to run a mill overnight either, so in the end everyone ends up on the same level.

My boys are always making fun of my  typing skills.  ::)   I took one semester of typing in high school and didn't learn a darn thing....guess that is partly my fault since I usually picked that class to skip out on.  ;D   My boys started leaning typing in elementary, they call it key boarding. Their fingers fly over the keys, it is amazing. I get by pretty well, especially if the words are in my head and not written down on a piece of paper. I really have tried not to look at the keyboard, since I do know where all the letters are and everything, but habits are hard to break and my eyes just seem to go there inspite of myself. Kinda like telling Norm to not look at the girlie calender on the wall everytime he walks by....he just can't help himself!  :D

Patty, my girls can type super fast, from chatting online with their friends, but you can't read it, no spelling at all.

As far as Norm, he's just feeling pity for those poor homely girls. ;D

In my late 60's senior year of high school I had to take an elective.  I took a half year of typing, the last half year in woodworking. I've used more knowledge from those two classes than any other.  Made a little money in college typing others' papers because typing was still a novel skill for us boys back then.

Had manual typewriters with one electric we took turns using.  I was the only boy with about 20 girls in typing.  Pure pleasure for me, don't think it made any difference with the girls.

Wow, you must have really been challeged if you didnt make it through high school until you were in your late 60's.  Most guys around here that I know give up if they dont get there by 19 or 20. ;)
