I've seen this plant two times in the last three years along the wood's edge. Does anyone know the name of the plant? Is it a perennial?

also known as deer candy because deer love to browse them.  See the deer browse on those stems, very normal to eat it back even further.  If you have healthy unbrowsed plants you don't have many deer.

I believe it has a square stem, been a long time so don't hold me to it.

In wildlife biology classes at AU it was described as an indicator plant for deer because of the deer's love for it. It has square stems if I remember correctly.
