Salary $1505.60 - $2193.60 Biweekly


JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  The primary responsibilities are to work with the NRCS Area Technical staff.  The position will provide biological training and technical support to NRCS, SWCD, IDALS-DSC, and DNR Private Lands field staff in a 21 county area.  This biological assistance incorporates fish, forest, wildlife and water quality considerations into agricultural programs for maximum wildlife and water quality benefits.  Examples of training and technical support include current wildlife research, principals, and practices of fish, forest and wildlife management.  Other examples include: writing burn plans, developing technical reports and guidelines for the State Field Office Technical Guide, conducting wetland feasibility and designs for restoration; and providing outreach to link landowners with conservation programs.  The position will plan and implement workshops to train and educate landowners, conservation volunteers, and NRCS/SWCD staff on a wide variety of biological aspects.  Handouts and informational material will be developed for landowners and NRCS/SWCD staff.


ABILITIES:  The person in this position must possess strong organization and communication skills and be able to express ideas orally and in writing.  The person must be able to work effectively and tactfully with a variety of interest groups, conservation organizations and agencies.  The candidate must possess knowledge of current farm program administrative rules and familiarity with the structure of USDA, IDALS-DSC and DNR in Iowa.  Knowledge of habitat management techniques, wildlife survey techniques, computer word processing, wetland design and survey methods, basic GIS/ArcView data preparation and analysis, and basic administrative skill relating to planning goals, coordinating and planning meetings.  Candidates must possess the ability to operate independently with indirect supervision under general coordination and program guidelines.


EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:  Graduation from an accredited four year college or university with major course work in the biological sciences; including at least 12 semester hours (or the academic equivalent) in wildlife biology, and the equivalent of two years of full-time experience in professional wildlife work.
