Title: Need a good mid range 20" saw- Husky or stihl, or jonsered, solo...
Post by: fury1973 on November 09, 2010, 05:47:59 PM
I have a handfull of saws, kinda from small to large (4 me anyhow). Shihl 025, 032AV, Husky 357XP, What I am looking for is kinda like the 032 (just not so heavy.) Something lighter to run a 18 or 20" for cutting larger felled logs. The 025 is set with a 14" and is great, the 032 is 16" and powerfull, just to heavy for all day cutting logs, the husqvarna is set with a 24". I just want input on what u recommend. I have no preference on brands, just think some of the smaller huskys are cheaply constructed. I also am looking at an arborist- anyone like the Husky T435 or the 338XP. Any insight would be great!! Thanks much

I'd just get a 20" bar for your 357xp. I got one on mine, it works good, but I'm gonna get an 18" when this bar wears out. I think the 357 fits what you're looking for almost perfectly. You've already got the saw, just get another bar. It would be cheaper. Unless you have the itch for a new saw......

I did the same with my 038 Mag, put a 20" on it from my 036. However, it is backwards compared to your situation....it is a heavier saw. But it rips through the wood so much faster than my 036.

I Usually keep a 16" bar on my 357XP. I agree with the others, it's a great saw for a 20" bar, and the price is certainly right if you already own the saw.

If you really want lighter, Husky says their 346XP and their 353 are rated for up to 20". I own the twin of the 353, a Jonsered 2152. IMO, a 20" bar is too much for it... unless all you want is more reach, not the ability to cut larger than 16" logs in one cut. I try to avoid using a longer bar just for more reach. It's poor body mechanics. (Can you tell I'm married to a physical therapist?) Take a step closer, or bend your legs to reach down.

thanks for all the imput!! I bought a ms310 on Ebay It is crazy clean- very fresh. It has a 20" bar. From what I gather, it is the newer version of my 032AV ? So I can keep my setup as this. My 025- 14". 032AV 16",  310-20" and my husky 357xp has a 24". Thanks for everyones imput. What a great website!

Fury-

This is a great website you are correct! Don't stop now though, if I were you I would read as much as you can stand. There is so much interesting information here.
