This throw bag has saved me quite often.  It might take a few times, but it works.

Agree, standing on a ladder while looking up and trying to manipulate a rope on the end of a pole may not be the best practice for steady balance.

I was going to suggest an extra long pole saw, I rigged up a 16' one that I used the pool vacuum pole and a cheap pole saw blade. The handle part fits in the pole with two bolts to hold it in, It's quite handy but will take a while to saw a solid 4" hardwood.

Where it would have to be cut is around 40'. Thats not going to happen with a manual polesaw with my rotten shoulders.  The end of the limb is pointing straight down, so if I have the loop of rope open on the end of the pole, I "should" be able to raise the pole straight up to get the loop over the end of the branch and have someone at the other end of the rope to pull the loop tight.

I'm more concerned about the lightening in the area and my 20' aluminum lighting rod.

Got it! A thirtyfoot aluminum pole is not bad to stand up  until you put a rope on it.

I was a bit nervous trying to get the loop on it. The thing moved at the slightest touch and i was straight under it.

Jeff-

One thing I know you CAN do is cast a spinning rod.  I've thrown a practice plug tied to braided line over limbs just like that to start the process.  Yes, it took awhile to loop over the limb, but it worked great and was less effort and more accurate than throwing.  Made a bit of a game out of it.  Congrats on clearing out the "incoming!"
