Sanded up some  maple slabs at a friends house yesterday, some incredible figure in some of these, some real nice spalting, sorry the pics are from a phone so they don't do them justice.  Slabs are about 13' long, any suggestions on how to clean up the live edge?

Very nice slabs,  got to love a sander that large.

Also, forgot,  I'd use a sanding flapper wheel on those edges.

Nice slabs and great to have that sander available.

Re: question.  Would depend on how "clean" you want the edge.

I'd consider sand blasting to just pick out the loose material but leave the under-bark character.

You can start with a brass wire hand brush once you have pulled the bark off. I usually stop there because I like to leave stuff behind onthe natural edge.

I do what the little voices in my wife's head tell me to do.

I go the old fashion way and start with a draw knife to get most of the bark off then on to a spoke shave and get most of the cambium layer off. then start sanding! works really well and surprisingly fast. Tim

What do you plan on doing with the slabs is the big question??

For benches.. signs.. large furniture pieces.. I'd do like beenthere suggests- a light bead blasting to clean it up and leave it.

Awsome looking slabs btw..    :)

I want to see a picture of whatever gets built out of those slabs.
