I'm working on a solution to a much complained about problem. I need a tester or two. You need to have a jave enabled computer. Most are.
Any takers?
I'm in.
Oh, and please put me down as "volunteer". ;D
Perfect. I'll send you an I.M.
I also need someone that is Forestry Forum photo upload challenged. :)
Well, I am challenged at everything I do. Do I qualify?
sure, I'll pm you instructions.
Everybody take one step backwards eh? ;)
Hey if I can figure it out everyone should be able to do it... :D
(https://forestryforum.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10009/2091/pigroast_08_4.jpg)
This photo started out at 2.65 mb, and before the program uploaded it it made it 43kb. I like this 8)
I'm pretty technology challenged, but I'm willing to help. By the way, I have a MAC
good test. Joan is trying it. The mac might be a stumper. I'll send you a message
The Mac should work if he has Java running on it. I was going to try from mine but figured the winderze one would work for sure. I'm off for a bit, be back later. Jeff I sent you an error message/log I received. Hope it helps.
Hey, even I got it to work. 8) If I can do it anybody can. ;D
(https://forestryforum.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10432/687/Bali_cooking1.jpg)
I think the picture was over 700kb before uploading.
Good for you Jeff.
If this is what I think, it will be a super great feature for the Forum pics.

It's not gonna make me speak Yooper again is it ?
well, Ya, maybe, but you wont know it cause you'll be thinking yooper too.
perhaps I should stay with the crayons and paper.
Thats not helping me help you help me. :)
Did you check your private messages and give it a try?
I did ,I imported my model A but I'm struggling to post it.
Tim, go to your gallery, go to your photo, under the photo you will see the code you need to copy and paste in your post to make the photo appear. Give it a try! Your almost there!
I get a hole bunch of writing de-bug etc...
Did you go to your gallery and find your photo? I see it. Your only one little step from posting it using the directions in my previous post. :)
Here's what I started with. This was 3.32 Mb
(https://forestryforum.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10011/1546/P1000274.JPG)
Its now 48 Kb
Using the optimizing, I could get that down to 20-23 Kb
So, observations Mr. Wenrich?
From here it looks like posting one big photo at a time will be a snap with this method. Multiple pictures needing resizes may have to either me done one at a time, or use the old way.
I give up
Tim, are you seeing something that looks lie this under your photo?
I just put 2 more pictures on at the same session. One started at 3.35 Mb and it went down to 42 Kb. The other one was 3.25 Mb and it went down to 21 Kb. Maybe it has something to do with the content and how complex the image.

I have crashed Mozilla a couple of times, and I have had a security notice about running the program.
Mozilla is notorious for having a tough time with java.
This is also auto scaling the dimensions of the photo. I took this photo of Lou's dog right from my camera. The new uploader rotated it and scaled it to fit the forum automatically.

Well Tim, you definitely just got the best quality photo uploaded you ever have even if you dont have it in a post yet. :)

You bet, anything that gives us an idea on weather to go ahead and make this the default and still have the old system for those that want to use it.
Worked for me using the Jupload.

Perfect candidate. :)
Actually I'll just post the instructions here for anyone that wants to give it a go now. It may or may not be agreeable to use for you. Thats what I am trying to find out.
I've installed a java uploader on the site to try and create a way to optimize photos for people. I need you to find a photo to see if it works for you that is bigger then the past limits.
If you go to the gallery, in the left menu you will see a menu item that says Juload. or Java Uloader depending on what page you are one. Give it a try and see if its going to be more confusing then simply doing it the way we have been doing it.
I'm out of control !!!
I was talking about me !
Lets not get to carried away now. :)
Nice logs.
They are part of the farm stand now.
It's working very well now. I uploaded 3 large pics at once and it handled it well. Posted them in the weather thread.
I've been running some tweaks on it. I may switch it to be the default uploader at some point with the option to use the old one.
Do's this mean I will be able to post pic's?????? :o :o :o :o
you may have created a monster ::)
Jeff, I tried that test we were talking about. So far, it looks pretty safe. You might want to disallow *** and other *** file types, though.
I am challenged .... :-\ :'(
Not to worry brother. Put your faith in a higher power (Jeff) and he will show you the way.
Here goes...

I like the Jupload even though I got lost moving the pic to my post ::) :-X
beauty eh ?
I can't access the pictures on my computer through Java, but after it is up I can switch to the old way of getting pictures and it seems to work fine, maybe I am just missing something.

She's a doberman Pup that has had its ears cut and tail bobbed. Dobies look like hounds until they have had their "cosmetic surgeries" This one's name is Sydney. She's a girl. I helped Lou keep her ears taped with foam splints to train them to stand up. I'm not a big Doberman fan but Sydney and I bonded. :D
That was likely due to her traumatization. :D

OK ..... I like it. What's the maximum file size the converter can handle? I tried some large one and got errors.
Then you know better then I do. ;) Actually there are several limiting factors and some of those are not totally defendant on the software.

Are you kidding me? I'm giddy about the new uploader and as you can see my attack dog is ecstatic !
For no particular reason other then a sense that it needs to be said, I want to say here, that we still have the same rules in place when it comes to Forestry Forum photo Galleries. The Forestry Forum galleries are a place to put photos that we are putting into posts. Once they are there, they must remain there so the links do not break over time. a year from now, 5 years, 10 years, We dont want any broken links to pictures within the forum. In over 8 years worth of posting, you wont find but a small handful of missing photos within the forum. You would have to hunt high and low to find one. I'm not even sure if or where one might exist ofhand.
That being said, outside of uploading to test on this thread being a special case, again, the gallery space is reserved for photos used to add to or compliment content of posts. They are not meant as simply a place to put photos willy-nilly. We just don't have the room for that sort of thing.
duly noted.

You need to have an album first.
What the heck is DIIK? I don't speak text.
Since I see the XAT label on the photo, I know you never tested anything. ;)
OK, so tell us the secret.
Gotcha.
No secret, just go to the upload page with the link under your post box, and you can now upload (for the most part) a full sized photo and the forum will do the work for you. No more messing around having to learn how to optimize in order to upload. You still however have to get the photo from the gallery to the post, but most can conquer that. :)
You posted while I was answering, but I'll post this anyhow.
Ya a two shnake(s) of all things ... sheesh , no deers out there ... ::)
oh yes I did....
tried to insert a simple photo several times...
twice I got an IE failure....
or
went to a album site.... several times....
FWIW... I tried the photo on the palm piolet..
with two freezes.. just closed the window...
guess it's not meant to be....
There's no way a palm pilot is going to work. Some systems, especially older systems or systems where java had either not been installed or has been unistalled won't be able to do it either. More then likely you need to download java for your computer.
picture of a palm piolet....
it makes light of moderen technology....
I now have 11 albums... that pic won't load to...
I'll leave it all alone...
I tried the new thingy and don't like it...because I'm a antique. My PC is old but I am running XP with Java. The first thing it did was prompt me to download a applet which I did. Only took about an hour. To install it I was supposed to download a Java update to replace my old Java version. No way on dialup...a Java download would take 12 hours? if all works right. :(
Kathy has a new PC...I'll try her machine...next time she leaves town. ;)
You still have the option to use the old way. The applet should have taken no more then a minute even on a slow connection. If it was slow, it was probably do to computer processing, not the downloading.
Firefox and Java loaded but the box below shows up for a second and then goes away

the java uploader seemed to work ok in Google chrome, but I had to copy and paste the link as it would not add the pic to the post automatically when I asked it to.
I can't even delete the pictures from my camera the idiot kid I had helping in WV took. I'm afraid ta even try :( :( Think I'll take a hint from Dang,'n go cogitate on it a while

That needs some tweaking. The reason it didn't add it is probably that you ended up with ANOTHER tab open after the original upload tab. You can only have the code go back to the window that spawned it, so if you were in the third tab, you were once removed from the original call for the code. I know, that dont make sense, but I'll try to see if I can do some tweaking to the system to improve it.
Jeff you are right, by the time I tried to add it to the post I had 3 tabs open.
It is still way easier than resizing, compressing and uploading.
Quote from: Kevin_H. on January 06, 2009, 12:07:57 AMIt is still way easier than resizing, compressing and uploading.
Yes, it is. I love it!
Many thanks to you Jeff, for rigging up the new pic java uploader. And as well, tossing in the choice to do either way. Appreciate you tackling the job, and ironing out the wrinkles that we come up with.
Now if you could just do the same with a windoz movie..
