I met a guy that hand hews recurve bows and looks specifically for Ironwood. something about the way he can shape it with the grain patters and the strength.

Oh, and in our area this one is Ironwood, and the smooth gray bark one is called musclewood. a 12"dbh Ironwood tree is big and old here.Don't really see many that large. I did a report on the two trees in school many, many, many years ago, and if I remember right the Ironwood leaf serrations are (relative) big tooth, small tooth, big tooth, etc, where the serrations on the musclewood (Blue Beech?) are relatively the same size. That is if you have a leaf to look at, other than that the thin peeling bark is a dead giveaway.

They are both in the birch family, and both have leaves that are doubly serrate.
