I am slowly working on the pecan bowl Olen sent me.  Did I ever say that pecan is hard ??? ??? ;D.  There ain't no instant pudding with some things ::).  That bowl is a beautimous thing, though.  I will post a pic as I make a little more progress.

Hmmm...I seem to remember you making some mention of that at some point in the past ;)

All this fine, tedious, finger-numbing work might be the reason that 99.9999% of the handcrafted doughbowls were left in what we would call a semi-rough condition.  Smooth to most Chefs was determined by the point at which you no longer got splinters. :D

Yer DanG right about that!  Our toil was not in vain as that wainscott looks great.  The old hickory family raises its hard head from time to time.   :).

Made some progress on the Dough bowl.
I have been rubbin' that darker area to the right of the knot.  Got a ways to go yet.
Any suggestions for the best kind of finish?

Moose, I'm using tung oil on mine.

This is a shot of the top of the bowl

I finished it with mineral oil....Lots of mineral oil....It really soaked it up  ::)  ::)  ::)

Thanks Olen, this is a piece that is unique and beautiful and will be in our collection forever   ;)  ;)  ;D  ;D

Oh...I almost forgot.....sanded from 60 grit to 220 and ready for finish in 13 minutes   ;D  ;D

 :o  The bowl is awesome!

I have never seen sweet gum wood before, much less spalted sweet gum. Holy Cow!

So, Woodbowl, do you sell these bowls to just anyone? Or do we have to come visit? Please message me with details.

Burlkraft inspired me to finish my dough bowl today although it did take me longer than 13 minutes. :D
I didn't have any 220 grit paper but started with 80 grit, then 150 grit and finished with 400 grit.  I'd wear out the edges of the paper using the sander then use the center of the paper folded in hand holding the bowl with the other arm sorta like holdin' a Violin except I was sanding. ;D
Steve had recommended I sandblast the live edges cause it would have been impossible sanding in between the spalted grooves and edges.  I got one of them cheapo abrasive blast guns from harbor freight.  It kinda looks like it has a Sportster Gas tank on it. :D  It worked fairly well blasting with crushed walnut shells although that wasn't recommended with this gun.  It got jammed up a couple times.
For the finish, I went with Radar's recommendation of Furby's Tung Oil finish. ;D(Formby's)  I got about 6 of the 8 ozs. on it already.  It sucks it up and is dry immediately seems like.  I may put the rest on later.
This piece is going to our very special friends who I know are gonna cherish it and take care of it.

The bowl is beautiful!  I couldn't help but notice the green grass.....gosh what I would give for some green grass up here in the great white north.  :-\

Here is the Poplar Dough Bowl I finally finished.

The sycamore is getting close.

The sweetgum still has some work to get the finish to smooth out.
