Carl: good to know you, and thanks for your input over the last while...

Australia is one of the few places I really want to visit and can't figure out how to get to cheap- just too far away, I guess.  I have friends in New Zealand that I'd love to see again but that won't happen anytime soon either.  Oh, well, plenty to keep me busy here...   :)

You must also have plenty of space to keep all that stuff.

You can never have too many boats.

Welcome to the forum.  I noticed that you said you enjoyed shooting, so you can own a gun in Australia?? ??? I don't know why I thought Australia was one of the places guns had been banned.  ???

Hi, Carl. Welcome to the forum.  I think you'll fit right in.

Hey there Carl, glad to get to know you.  I have enjoyed reading your (and the others with Lucas' )posts about milling with a Lucas.  You have taught me a few tricks.

Post up some pics of the boats, I would like seeing the 21' build you got going on.  I have dabbled with some small boat building (like pirogues).  This has brought about an unexplainable mental disorder ;) compelling me to build a larger  wooden boat.  To me 21' is large.

Built my own band mill with the help of Forestry Forum.

Carl, I researched solar kilns a bit today.  Found myself on a woodworkers forum from Austrailia, and saw that you were at one time building a solar kiln.  How is that going?  I am considering building one myself.

Yes, I was wondering about that too. If you ever come here to visit, we can take you shooting and you can try out all kinds of guns-- and bows, if you like them.

I did go to Queensland once-- spent 4 days in Cairns. Very nice. I was only 20 at the time. I spent 4 and a half months in Victoria with a few days in SA and NSW.

Guns -

we are allowed to own guns, you have to have a licence and each gun has to be registered. to get a licence you have to have a legitimate reason and no history of violence. you have to either live on a large property, be a member of a gun club, work on a station or have a job that requires you to carry a gun (security guard). you cant own a pistol unless you are a member of a pistol club and then it has to be kept at the club. all guns ahev to be kept in a safe that is bolted down. tehy also have to be stored with the bolts out/action broken and ammunition stored seperatly.

pretty highly regulated but you can still have some fun.

we dont have hunting season or anything like that. and you are oly allowed to shoot on private land. if you go into national park with a gun even if its not loaded and stowed away you will land ya self a massive fine and lose ya gun licence.

most native animals are protected and not alowed to be shot. but we have that many fels it dosent matter.

hare
rabbit
deer
bafalow
dogs
camels
cats
goats
pigs

dingos are about the only native you can shoot. and kangaroos out west.

I'm with you there, Weisy- as they say here in the South, you can tell the rich rednecks by the fact they have two rusted pickups setting up on blocks in the back yard... and I've got three! :D  Moved two of them yesterday because I was tired of looking at them begging me to do something with them, so I did: moved them back on the property about 100'...
