Ugly log sawn today

Sawed a couple of ugly maples today.  Here is one on the mill.



Came out with some nice spalt.





Any of you southerners want to guess what animal made these holes?

They do that up here too.  (Even if it turns out to be the 44!)

Ugly?  Shoot, looks pretty straight to me and the lumber looks even better.  Would make some great shelves or cabinents.  Course, it depends on what you were looking for- me, I look for what I get and then figure out what to do with it.  If you have a use already in mind, you're more likely to be disappointed. Given the nature of wood, you get what you get...

The spalted maple wood in your pictures would make certain of my former customers drool.  Seriously.  And I'm not talking about from old age or physical defect.  Just love of that kind of wood.
