How does one deal with the change in a common rafter design where the purlin plate or the rafter plate shrinks and creates gaps in the enclosure? The only solution I can find is in one of Ted Bensons books. He mentions using seasoned timbers. That doesn't seem practical. Any thoughts?

You need to be more specific about the location of the gap your referring to.

If the enclosure system is done with the shrinkage in mind then the materials will not buckle or leave a gap.

Special trim placement and such things come to mind.

I've seen that with SIPS walls they leave a gap at the top of the wall between the wall panel and the roof panel so that when the rafters or plates shrink the gap will close.
This gap is filled with expanding foam that is compressed when the gap shrinks.
This is one method of dealing with this type of shrinkage, with this enclosure system.

That is exactly what I was talking about Jim. I didn't know that expanding foam would have such flexability that long after curing. Good to know. Thanks for the picture.
