A lady on another forum posted this.... can anyone help? I believe she's in Tennessee.
"We have a giant oak in our backyard. Last night about 2am, we heard a loud thud. It sounded like someone falling out of bed. :lol We realized it was a limb from the tree. It was a pretty big limb but the only damage it did was bending our basketball goal.
The issue is it has this fungus or mold all over it. I was wondering if anyone could identify it. We are calling the tree guys out tomorrow, but I am curious now.
Here's a pic.

I really, really, really don't want to lose this tree. It's over 100 years old and shades almost out entire huge backyard."
Thanks in advance!
Shoot. I forgot about the picture thing.... I'll try to fix that.

Wendy_H, I don't know a whole lot about fungus but it looks like a Phlebia species to me. Hope that helps. Maybe Phlebia radiata.
Appears that the fungus is growing on dead branches/limbs. May not be the cause of the death of the tree, but may be an end result.
Thanks! I really appreciate the help/opinions!
Yep, this is a decomposing fungus that gets on dead wood. It's not the cause of death itself.
Ditto, saprophyte!
