Went to see about removing a giant Willow oak. I will post pics when I get home. Going to need some help and advice on this one. The owner had a tree service remove all the limbs. The first main limb broke off and almost killed the owner and his young grandson.
Thanks to Steve (flatrock58) for the referral.
What is left standing is about 24' tall and 10' from the house. It has a slight lean parallel to the house. Owners only request is that I drop it perpendicular away from house.
What are your thoughts about willow oak? from what I can tell it grew very fast. The growth rings from main limb have 1/4 growth rings.
And another

Did the Elves that lived in it move? :D
Is it a true pin oak? In the South, people commonly call water oak, willow oak, and laurel oak "pin oak". Especially those folks in Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas.
True pin oak, Quercus palustris, only grows this far South as an ornamental.
Sorry Danny I believe it is a willow oak

That is a big one for sure. Are you going to slab it?
I'm thinking of taking a couple slabs and quarter sawing the rest.
Jake (Customsawyer)
Would you like to help me with this one?
It would be a good excuse to come see the mill.
I wouldn't mind coming up and helping. I need to pick your brain on your mill anyway. ;D Should I throw my WDH in the truck? :D Where is it located, close to you?
Yes definitely need your WDH.
The tree is located in Carrollton Ga.
Thanks Jake
Ya might better throw the 066 in as well.
The giant willow oak I slabbed with my 090 in 2010 produced some nice slabs for me. Five pieces at ten feet long and over fifty inches wide, each. VERY heavy, so watch your toes. ;)
OH BOY, Group project/road trip! Look forward to pictures!
Al (slider)
If I could convince you to put your restoration project back to work for a test drive out to west Ga we may have a vehicle that will haul this tree in one piece.
Daniel, Make sure to give me a call when you plan on cutting it. I want to come down and see that!
Will do Steve

This is my chainsaw with 48" bar.
The orange marks on tree are at 6' and 12'
We are looking at taking it down this Saturday.
This is me standing in tree where the first limb broke off.

All I can say is ,You don't dread it.
Didn't know you were such a little guy. ;D ;D
This is Patrick he is a little taller than I am.
He is 6'
The limb on the right I will be removing tomorrow.
It is about 6'-8' long and about 30" across

Patrick doesn't like having his picture taken.. :D
Holy Moly!
Big tree, Two cords of firewood maybe.
Weather on Saturday might be bad for big tree cutting!
Daniel how are you going to load that monster after you get it down.
How is it you Georgia boys get all the fun? ;D Can hardly wait to see what's inside that rascal.
You boys over there sure do like a good challenge! This will be fun to watch :new_year:

Fun, and a lot of work :D :D popcorn_smiley
We may need to cut it into manageable pieces once it's on the ground. I can lift 5k pounds without much problem. Estimate this tree is around 18k right now.
The pictures of both of you, really tells it's size.
You're going to need a longer bar....... ;D
Make sure your insurance is paid up, just in case that thing falls the wrong way. :o
Well I guess I got kicked to the curb due to rain coming in on Saturday. Maybe next time.
I hope it is worth the trouble you are going to have to go through.
(https://forestryforum.com/gallery/albums/userpics/24656/20150101_134924.jpg) Worked on getting tree trimmed up today. Took the one large limb off the house side and cleaned up the base a little. I know I'll probably get scolded by some of the guys that know I shouldn't have a 36" bar on my 290 and I'll probably be replacing the clutch a lot sooner.

The home owner pulled it over to this location after we got it on the ground.

Thats no joke. A customer brought me a huge cottonwood log that totaled an entire house when someone took it down incorrectly.
So, is it down?
No it is not down. I'll be waiting till Monday for better weather conditions.
I've never took one any where near that big down, but you went about it the way I would've taking off those root swells. I believe you guys will be sawing real soon.

I have a 41" bar on my 084 and I have a 59" ordered.
I'm going to put two 4,500 lbs chains going down to my 4x4 f350 with my bobcat on the flat bed combined weight of 14k lbs also going to have my 30' trailer with my forklift that combo of trailer and lift weights about 13k lbs. I may even get home owner to hook up to my trailer with his 4x4 8000 series kabota tractor.
Well Jake and Julio came down to Carrollton and got this tree on the ground for me.
I'm really really glad I didn't do this without there help.
Thanks again Guys you are Awesome.
Thanks to Steve we have video of the big moment.

You will have to post pics when you open her up. ;)
Easy peasy, nice work guys, never a doubt.
I will definitely post more pics after I open it up.
I'm so glad it wasn't hollow inside.
I bet it takes me more than three hours to break it down. :o
I hope it doesn't take three days.
Great job, that sure is a biggun.
YH
That is a Hoss for sure. Good job.
Thanks for video and pictures! Great job guys and glad it went off without issues!
Well done. I didn't expect less than success.
I'd say one thing is for sure....you definitely know how to properly entertain a bunch of log and lumber loving guys on the forum! Congrats on getting that majestic oak down, oh what beautiful lumber lies ahead!
Love it when a plan comes together ;) :)
Pity the video can't capture the THUMP of something like that hitting the ground ;D
That was the easy part, now the work starts :D :D :D :D
Down it is!!! When I cut a big one,I shut the saw right off. I love to hear them hit the ground. And feel them hit too. :)
Definitely a big one, nice pics, and can't wait to see it sliced up.
Great !! The legend continues..............
That thing is a BEAST!!
Congrats on getting it down safely
Hopefully Monday we will be breaking this down thanks to Gasawyer and his Lucas mill. Pray the weather holds off till Monday afternoon. I'll be doing some prep work tomorrow getting it ready.
Ga Mill,
I got cold chills just looking at that stump. Glad you got it down okay and found it to be solid. I'd have bet it would be hollow. I worked in southern Norway and they had a big stump similar to that they had cut in a park and left it there for the kids to play on. The kids loved it and played all over it. With our safety regs and sue happy society you would never see such as that in a US Park which is a shame. Good luck with the slabbing. Continue to be careful.
Can't wait to see what it looks like inside.
Thanks to Todd GAsawyer for his hard work this is what we did today.
Also thanks to Steve Flatrock58 for stopping by and helping

Going, going, go....., plus it looks like you collected a trinket or two. :-\
It does have metal in it but we slabbed one 20" first cut one 9" and three 7.5" that I will load and take to my shop to cut down into 3" and 3.5" Not sure we really cut into any metal today. I'm sure to find it just need to use a brand new band to find it.
I'll have bad dreams thinking about if I had to mill this log. :)
Glad to see it got done. That was to big of a log to see go to waste.
Todd how did you like that new slabber?
I just saw this thread this morning. Great job all involved!!!!!! That slabber is fantastic! What a way to break a log that gigantic into somewhat moveable pieces. Thanks for taking me along on this journey.
Good job! Looks like you about maxed out that mill. ;D
Wow...
Good job to all involved on this job.
Speaking of bad dreams.I did not sleep well until the 72 in oak we just took down was on the ground.
That slabber is nice.
Here are a couple videos cutting with the Lucas mill.
