Anybody having trouble with the double air filter on the Stihl 362? I'm kind of upset with this system, Twice now I have cleaned the airfilter and found splinters had penetrated the outer filter...so many that it was ridiculous! They get stuck half way through the filter, looks like a porcupine. When the 2nd filter comes off there is tale tell sign that there is a problem with sealing and dust has gone into the intake. I clean this filter routinely, and always check how everything seals. I really don't understand why they had to make the switch to this filter. Why not put the K&N style filters like a 44 I had several years ago? Surely I am not the only person who is having this problem. Our Stihl dealer in town just sells the saws...not really any experts, plus I usually work past closing so I can't call them. Thanks in advance for any insight to my problem. Heck, who knows...maybe I got a factory defective air filter???
Well I'm glad it's just me...must be a totally isolated event. ::)
I will check mine and let you know . Good question anyway
havent had any trouble with mine. i just bought a 261 i like that what a screamer
If i had dust in the intake i would be very concerned, which you are. I know i couldn't run it knowing dirt was getting into the engine though the filter until i found the problem.
hey I checked my very new 362 stihl And your right it getting dust through the filter. Im not impressed one bit thats supposed to be a pro platform saw and with dust and dirt getting past is not good. I havent even wore one chain out and can see fine dust in the carb. Im going to get ahold of stihl ASAP
I just got a 362 a few weeks ago. Haven't actually put it to a log just yet, but I'll be watching for this issue. Hopefully not. I'll keep checking back to see if theirs any more info.
Thank you fellas for your replies! I will take a few pics 2moro and post them. I wish someone from Stihl would respond to this thread. The pics are going to show a failed air filter system and I wouldn't doubt somesort of a re-call is in need to fix the problem. The hood on the 362 is going to make it nearly impossible to just swap out the 361 air filter...I don't know really what can be done. Thanks again for your replies...be sure to check your intakes.
Your Stihl dealer is your best bet for some attention from Stihl. He/she has a regional rep.
Doubt any Stihl reps are poking around the internet on Forums looking for problems to solve. ;)
I don't get to my Stihl dealer often but this is a good excuse to stop by for a visit. I'll see what he says.
Thanks beenthere!
mine has 2 air filters inner and an outer. the inner is clean along with inside of the carb
Digging this old one up. Was hoping there was an answer here. I'm in need of a new filter, and if there is something to replace this, and function better, it would be good to know.
Did you find a solution? I just bought a used MS362 non m-tronic and it has the old style filter. The new ones come with the HD filter (round one). I looked in to changing over to that and it is possible. Just need a few more parts...the back plate etc. The dealer said it would be about $60 to change it over.
I have not. Was waiting to hear something here.
We have an early 362 that does them same. The filter gets porcupined with splinters and I have seen alot of dust and debris get past the filter on this saw as well. To be honest, I'm not sure how it's lasted this long with this filter setup.
And you need the top covet

I would like to see the photo you mentioned
Since the warranty is over with this saw I plan to make a few slight adjustments on this ms362 and I may get the HD filter setup to start with. Glad I seen this thread as I always wondered if the newer filter could be adapted to the early ms362's. :)
Here's what I mean about this saw getting dust past the filter.

Would like to see how this update/mod is done, and what you need.

Here you go. Looks like the fine stuff gets past the sealing surfaces of the main filter and the big stuff inside the pre filter weaves through but I could be wrong.

That's what mine looks like
I think a block of sponge/foam between the filter and the filter cover might solve the problem. Because from the pictures it would seem the saw dust is going in through the edge of the filter and not through the filter, reason being the filter seat is not pressed into its seat.

That's a good idea, that may help keep the filter pressed against the base. From what I can tell, it looks like the filter leak would be towards the bottom as the top of the filter clips on tight.
I'm go check myn..I know that the filters themselves can be a bugger to out back on. They arent cheap either try buyin a new one better hold onto your sneakers
Hold the choke/kill switch down, helps the filter clear when removing and installing. Helps on this one atleast.
Here are a couple of pics of my filter. I just bought the saw used and that is how it was. He has the winter filter on and then the cloth/fibre filter on top. It doesn's appear to be getting through the winter filter (the splinters) but dust is.

Are you saying that the orange cover will not fit over the HD filter?
I was told you need the top cover if you use the Sthil m tonic air filter. The Sthil dealer told me that. He changed one over. It wasn't simple.
I looked at a ms362 and a ms362C side by side and the top cover of the m-tronic will not fit the older 362, nor vice versa without swapping the white plastic base. So with the complete filter swap it looks like you would have to use the newer style cover as well.
The newer cover is slightly taller to accommodate the larger filter but won't clear the white plastic piece on the older model. So I assume that piece is one of the parts that have to be replaced in the swap.

Thanks for the tip...i priced it out to around $60, so depending on how much the white piece and the orange cover are will depend on if i do it or not. If it is under $100 it might be worth it.
What do you guys think?
