440b skidder winch shaft not turning

I have a 440 b that the winch was working perfectly and I was pulling a tree and it stopped...realized the shaft had stopped turning...I took the steering section off pulled the plate off the top of the housing where the shaft goes... found a big gear with a small cog under it but don't know what makes it turn...I have no knowledge or experience with this machine...any guidance on where to start

I had a older just straight 440. No letter. And it had a shaft that ran through the bellhousing. It was long 2 foot I'm guessing. Maybe that broke or something. Maybe someone else will have a book or better knowledge

i have seen this before but it was like 30 yrs ago. 2 snap rings that hold the shift fork. seems like the snap rings  moved and had to remachine the grove

The dozers from that era had a roll pin that connected a two piece driveshaft that powered the winch. Looking at the larger outside shaft would be turning and you would barely notice the smaller diameter inside tubing going into the winch was not if that roll pin broke or fell out. Not sure if the skidders are set up the same but think they shared the same winch at that time frame.

Maybe the splined coupling (part 7) finally wore out?    It generally means the news is not that bad if it stopped all of a sudden without those WTH noises.

Mine did that but squealed real bad from slipping inside the warm splins.

I had to replace the coupling and the shaft on mine. It would still turn but if you tried to load the winch it would slip. Both sets of splines were shot.
