I have a 80' x 3' across red oak in the back yard. It has large round growths on the limbs that drop year round on the roof. Is this a fungus of some type? Can I get rid of it. We put a new metal roof on and i installed 1" styrofoam under to lessen the dents I hope. Some are as large as 3" in dia. and knobby. Any ideas? Chuck

Okay I made it back and I have some pictures.

We like pictures. Don't think I've ever seen any knobby dents...  8)

Other than that, I'm no help at all. Hopefully somebody that knows something will be around soon to answer your question.

The first question I would ask is, Are you sure it's an Oak tree?   Is it a nut or seed pod?

The second thing I would suggest is that it might be Galls.  They are growths caused by the sting of a midge, wasp or other insect creating a "bulge" in which the insects eggs are layed.

Here is link to some pictures and a little write-up

Beenthere and Tom, okay I think I have these in the post.

Tom this is what has always been refered to as Red Oak in our area. I know they have a Black Jack Oak that is supposed to have a rough bark also. This tree makes acorns a plenty so I've ruled out nuts. The growthe could be Gall. Never heard of it but you could sink a battle ship with what I don't know. The wife is going to harvest one and split it open. The she's going to send some pictures of it to me out here.

They're a pain in the yard for the mowing season also because they really fly when mowed. We had a good rain last nite she was telling me and didn't notice and damage to the new roof despite the limbs down in the yard maybe the 1" insulation board is going to help. Didn't say whether she heard a lot of debris hitting the roof though.

Hope the pictures will help. Thanks Chuck

Nope they didn't go so will try again.

Okay guys wasn't smart enough. If you have time to go to my profile it is the tree scene showing the out air condencer unit. The tree over it is what we call a red oak. Will get one of the techs. here to help me later. Thanks Chuck
