Hello,

Hopefully this is the right place to go for help on Forestry Forum
I am new to the gps world and trying to figure out the position formatting on the GPS I have.
I am trying to locate some property corners and I have a map of the property.  The map has gridlines on it and a few of the grids have coordinates
on them so I am hoping if I can figure out the coordinate system, I can use the GPS to help me get closer to the actual corners to mark them on the GPS.

An example of the coordinates on the paper map I have is
E 126500m
N 191500m

Any ideas on which GPS position coordinate this would be on a GPS?

I don't see anything in my (new to me) that comes close to matching these coordinates in the position format menu.  I am guessing that this is because the first few numbers are missing from the map as it is a local map of a small area.  Any thoughts or ideas?

Thanks in advance

Thanks for my

Would you help us out with where this map is at, or near? You say it is "local", but where is local at?
south central Wisconsin

Looks like it could be UTM format to me but those numbers given aren't in range. Also missing would be what UTM zone you are in, Vermont looks like most of it falls in zone 18 with just the north east corner being in 19.

My best guess is that your map is likely to be the the Vermont (given your location) State Plane Coordinate System. It represents a point 126,500 meters East and 191,500 meters north of a defined fixed point. Vermont's zone is 4400.

Given that you have meters listed, it is most likely the North American Datum of 1983 (NAD83) vs 1927 (NAD27).

Plugging your info into the calculator at:

    http://www.earthpoint.us/StatePlane.aspx

Assuming you are in Zone 4400 for Vermont:

Position   4400 126500 191500

Zone   4400 - Vermont
Meters   US Survey Feet   International Feet
X   126500.000   415025.417   415026.247
Y   191500.000   628279.583   628280.840

Calculated Values - based on Degrees Lat Long to seven decimal places.
Position Type   State Plane - Vermont
Degrees Lat Long    44.1283112°, -077.1668225°
Degrees Minutes   44°07.69867', -077°10.00935'
Degrees Minutes Seconds    44°07'41.9202", -077°10'00.5610"
State Plane X Y (Meters)   4400 126499.992mE 191500.000mN
X Y (US Survey Feet)   4400 415025.390ftUSE 628279.583ftUSN
X Y (International Feet)   4400 415026.220ftE 628280.840ftN
UTM   18T 326650mE 4888407mN
MGRS   18TUP2665088407
Grid North   -1.5°
Maidenhead   FN14JD90XT50
GEOREF   GJNQ49990769

Unfortunately that puts your point in Canada just NE of Niagara Falls. So I may have the wrong zone or Datum, check your map. Or you have the coordinates incorrect.

Not a great answer, but hopefully it puts you on the right track.

No datum notes on the map?

thanks for all the replies so far.

The property is in Central Vermont in the town of Fayston

Some additional information that might be helpful is that is is an Orthophoto basesheet 124188 and 124192/1996

Is that information pertinent?  There is no datum.  This is a map for the use value program.  I guess it is sort of like a map and an arial photo with the boundaries plugged into it.

Please excuse my ignorance on this, I am trying to learn.

Thanks

There is a guide to Map Standards within the Use Value program. It can be found:

     http://www.state.vt.us/tax/pdf.word.excel/pvr/Map%20Standards%209-09.pdf

It describes the State Plane Coordinate System for Vermont and how it applies to creating maps for the program.

The sheet number relates to the Coordinate System. It also describes how to read the coordinates, though I have to say it is confusing how they chose to do this calculation.

Look at the sample map for guidance.

I dumped the Base Sheet (124188) into a GIS and read the lat long off of that.
