Surprise Lilly's

Spider Lilly's are popping up along the roadside and at old home sites. 


 
They are often referred to as Surprise Lilly's because they seemly pop up overnight.  I guess they could also be called Smile Lilly's because you have to smile when you see a clump of them.   :)

Yup, those two years ago are here at home and they are all blooming.  Today's picture was some that apparently my Mom had planted outside her kitchen window.  I just could not pass them up.  :)

The scientific name is; Lycoris radiata.  The bulb made it's way into North Carolina from Japan in the 1800's, and then spread across the South.  They are not really a lily, but are members of the Amaryllis family.

After the flower fades, dark blue-green foliage will appear and will stay with us during the Winter months.   :)
