Surprise Lilly's

Spider Lilly's are popping up along the roadside and at old home sites. 


 
They are often referred to as Surprise Lilly's because they seemly pop up overnight.  I guess they could also be called Smile Lilly's because you have to smile when you see a clump of them.

Yup, those two years ago are here at home and they are all blooming.  Today's picture was some that apparently my Mom had planted outside her kitchen window.  I just could not pass them up.

The scientific name is; Lycoris radiata.  The bulb made it's way into North Carolina from Japan in the 1800's, and then spread across the South.  They are not really a lily, but are members of the Amaryllis family.

After the flower fades, dark blue-green foliage will appear and will stay with us during the Winter months.
