 Nice video and info on 71 Detroit,some history audio isn't best
but interesting.

 ;D Those old screamin Jimmys were LOUD, with a straight pipe behind the cab conversation was impossible when the jake kicked in. The 318 was the 6-53, little brother to that beast.

318 was a 653?? no 318 was a 8v71 and it wasnt always 318hp could have been as low as 280hp  the sliver 8v71 turbo was either 350 or 370hp

318 is an 8v71. They've got a unique sound when you get them wound right up. :D

 I put many a mile on a C O E GMC with that 318 humming, it had 15 speed Road Ranger all ways shifting but could really move almost
put one asleep as she rolled down the highway,sure brings back memories.

The truck I ran was a GMC General. It was a tri-axle, but had the lift taken off. We were hauling silage, which isn't much of a load. 13 speed RR. That thing had long legs.

I met a guy that had a 12v71 in a old greyhound type bus, shoehorn special with the radiator and part of the engine hanging out back past the sheetmetal.  He said when people used to ask him what was under the hood he would tell them  "A pair of 238's".

didn't the old terex dozers have 2 8v71s in them or was it the 8v92s I can remember about 20 or so years ago watching one in action pretty neat

The TC-12 had two 6-71s at 250HP.

Housewright - it was his buddy Dave the generator mechanic that owned the bus, although I think Carl helped with (maybe masterminded) the frankenstein motor swap.  Carl had a 3 or 4 cylinder detroit in a F250 if I remember right, and the truck was painted Detroit green too.  He passed me going up Afton Mtn one day about 10 years ago, I had a 400hp N14 and was running empty to Fishersville to pick up a load, he had another motor loaded in the back of the F250 and I heard him for longer than I saw him.  Dave is still around, but I'm not sure about Carl, I thought I heard something a few years back about him passing. 

Dave S - I used to have a TS-14 scraper, mine had twin 4-71 engines.

I've always wondered what the biggest Detroit 2 cycle was. I know they made a 16v149. A friend of mine was in the Navy, and they had 8-268 gensets on the big ship. They had big V's on the tug, but I don't remember the size.

Wiki says biggest 71 is a 24v71@1,800 hp. :D

The tugs had 12-278s.

WOW didn't know they went to 24V on the 71's must be one big chunk of metal.

They are just multiples of the 8 cylinder block.

 I've seen 12's and 16's, and seen 2x 12's mated back to back but never a solid block. Why anyone would do it is beyond me. The 71's are less and less common, more down in the gulf but still quite a few on the boats out of NYC. Look up a 645 or 710 EMD if you wanna see what a real 2 stroke looks like. The ones I run are only 8cyls, making 2000hp each at 900 rpm.  :D.

The diesels on the big ship were Nordberg 9 cylinder engines. 3,100 Hp at 180, I think. At the ski area we had a pair of 1,600 hp Fairbanks FD38's. 10 cylinders, 20 pistons, twin opposed cranks. They had 1,200kw generators on them. They came out of a sub, I was told.

FB / Morse engines are so cool once you wrap your head around how they work, one crank over the other with lead on 1 crank, just neat.  :D

Rebuilt quite a few 8/71's & 12/71's in the early 70's 8/71's were rated @ 290 hp 950 lbs.torque with N65 injectors,truck application.Had a local Brockway dealer equip his gravel hauling truck customers 8/71's,9513Road Ranger Trans,44K rears with 4:62 ratio rears.Trucks used to run about 64mph @ 2300.If you were young and a drag racer like many of us you were right at home pulling gravel with that set up,get down to 1800 just split it and bring it up to 2300 and grab another gear.They pulled very good considering they would pulling close to 100k gross.
